Uptown Twirl, a first-out winner at Santa Anita last June, was fifth when thrown into graded competition next time out in the GII Sorrento S. and was second behind the reopposing Surfside Tiara (Scat Daddy) in the Oct. 11 Anoakia S. before concluding her juvenile campaign with a fifth-place effort in a Nov. 12 optional claimer at Del Mar. She returned with a Jan. 18 optional claimer victory in Arcadia and was fifth in her turf debut in the Feb. 14 Sweet Life S. last time out. Hustled out to the early lead, Uptown Twirl was clear through an opening quarter in :22.01. Challenged by Moment is Right turning for home, Uptown Twirl fought back bravely along the rail and found another gear in the final sixteenth to earn her first stakes victory. “She didn't like the turf last time,” explained winning trainer John Sadler. “She was stakes placed once already, but she's been a little in and out. We've had high hopes for her, so it was kind of important for her to get a stakes win. She had been training well and showed some tenacity today. I told [jockey] Tyler [Baze] she would fight back if challenged.” Sambuca Classica's Pioneerof the Nile colt sold for $475,000 at last year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale. She produced a colt by Concord Point in 2015.
