Local Hero Rahy's Attorney Upsets Woodbine Mile Updated: 10:46 PM ET (First posted: 5:57 PM ET)
| 9th at WO | GI Woodbine Mile [1m (T)] | Winner: Rahy's Attorney by Crown Attorney |
WOODBINE MILE S.-GI, $1,013,938, WOX, 9-7, 3yo/up, 1mT, 1:36, yl. 1-- sRAHY'S ATTORNEY, 119, g, 4, by Crown Attorney 1st Dam: Rahy's Hope, by Rahy 2nd Dam: Roberto's Hope, by Roberto 3rd Dam: Our Tina Marie, by Nijinsky II

With the presence of last year's GI Breeders' Cup Mile hero Kip Deville (Kipling) and the Grade I-winning filly Ventura (Chester House) in yesterday's GI Woodbine Mile in Toronto, there appeared to be very little pre-race talk trickling down to many of the other competitors. However, it was 12-1 outsider Rahy's Attorney (Crown Attorney) who proved best on the day, landing the $1,000,000 event by 1 1/4 lengths over the hard-running filly Ventura. Content to track a pedestrian early pace set by Just Rushing (Wild Rush), Rahy's Attorney launched his bid approaching the turn. Ahead by a comfortable margin with a sixteenth left to go, the bay refused to yield as Ventura--with her ears pinned back--inched ever closer. However, it was the bay gelding who proved toughest of all in the stretch and had enough in reserve to hold off the game challenger. It was another 1 3/4 lengths back to another Candian-bred, Just Rushing, who held on for third. Rahy's Attorney proved his affinity for the turf at Woodbine, scoring in four of five starts on the green stuff last term. Among those victories was a 2 1/2-length score in the one-mile Vice Regent S. against Canadian-bred rivals early last September. The bay found the 10-furlong trip of a $62,000 optional claimer Sept. 30 a little to far outside his scope and had to settle for third. Back to his beloved one-mile trip, he closed out the season with a score in the restricted Bunty Lawless S. Oct. 28. A well-beaten seventh when placed on the Polytrack in a seven-furlong allowance Apr. 27, the gelding rebounded to collect his first graded-stakes score in the 1 1/16-mile GIII Connaught Cup May 25. Runner-up in the 12-panel GIII Singspiel S. June 22 over a rain-softened turf course, the Ontario-bred tired late to be third in an off-the-turf allowance July 13 before coming home fourth most recently in the 10-furlong GII Nijinsky S. New Approach was rising to prominence at this venue last year when winning the G3 Tyros S. in July and hit the heights with subsequent successes in The Curragh's G2 Futurity S. and G1 National S. and Newmarket's G1 Dewhurst S. over the next three months. Inched out on his sophomore bow in the May 3 G1 2000 Guineas back at the latter track, he was second again as Henrythenavigator subdued him again in the Irish equivalent three weeks later. While aggression was the main tactic at up to a mile, his subsequent runs when successful in the June 7 Epsom Classic and third in the Juddmonte contest were marked by an early keenness as connections sought to unravel his latent stamina. That was in evidence again here as Kevin Manning urged him into the bridle following a tardy start and he was soon over-racing in the slipstream of Ballydoyle's perennial front-runner Red Rock Canyon (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}). Passing that rival inside the final quarter, he had to be kept up to his work all the way to the line to ward off a crowd of contenders from which Traffic Guard emerged best. "At Newmarket, he was too keen on the day because we had to rush a lot of quick work into him and there really wasn't enough pace on today, but he had a nice easy race and should come out of it very well," Jim Bolger added, before outlining the upcoming options for New Approach. "He is in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe [at Longchamp Oct. 5], the [Oct. 18] G1 Champion S. at Newmarket and the GI Breeders Cup Classic [at Santa Anita Oct. 25]. He will probably run in two of them. If we could only win them all aseasy as that, it would be nice." Click for the Racing Post chart or the free brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree. Settled in midpack through a poky opening quarter in :25.46 and an even more unspectacular half mile in :52.09, the bay closed between rivals leaving the turn, came up between horses in the stretch and outgunned foreign invader Quijano (Ger) for the win. "I don't see why not," said Juddmonte Farms Racing Manager Lord Grimthorpe when asked if Champs Elysees would return for the Pattison Canadian International Oct. 4 "Obviously, Bobby [Frankel] will want to see how he comes out of the race, but he goes well on this turf course." Also Ran: Sageburg (Ire), Henrythenavigator, Natagora (Fr), Lovelace (GB), Forthe Millionkiss (Ger), Sarissa (Brz), Honoured Guest (Ire), Pas Seule (Fr). Goldikova fell just short of the mark in two Classics this term, the May 11 G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and the June 8 G1 Prix de Diane, and registered a first pattern-race score in the G3 Prix Chloe at Maisons-Laffitte July 6. She accounted for a solid cast in the Aug. 3 G1 G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville last time and improved yet further coming out of that distaffers' event to climb another rung of the ladder with a game victory in this all-aged contest. Racing a shade keenly in third during the initial strides, Goldikova settled in fourth once the pacemakers Sarissa (Brz) (Music Prospector), Pas Seule (Fr) (Iron Mask) and Honoured Guest (Ire) (Danehill) vied for control on the front end. Taking control as the rabbits wilted with 500 meters remaining, she gained first run on her held-up rivals and kept on in resolute fashion under a drive to claim deserved glory. "It was a strong race today, but I knew she'd run well and Olivier [Peslier] gave her a great ride," said trainer Freddy Head. "I will discuss her future with the Wertheimer brothers, but it is highly likely that she will now go to the Breeders' Cup meeting. We have to decide whether to go for the GI Mile or the GI Filly & Mare Turf. She showed in the Prix de Diane that she can stay the longer trip and it should be even less of a problem going around two turns in America." There will be no rematch between five-time Group 1 winner Duke of Marmalade (Ire) (Danehill) and G1 Epsom Derby hero New Approach (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) after connections decided to scratch "The Duke" from Sunday's rescheduled G1 Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion S. due to the ease in the ground. "He has achieved so much this year on good or quicker ground and we felt it would be unfair on the horse to run him on ground that would not suit him with a view to the rest of the season," trainer Aidan O'Brien told Racing Post. "Plans for the horse will be decided at a later date." Camped near the back of the pack while Stroke the Tiger (Smart Strike) set dawdling early splits of :25.24, :49.83 and 1:14.05, the chestnut gradually begun to close on the leaders after a mile in 1:38.86. Inching to the front a sixteenth from the wire, the five-year-old mare drew clear to collect her second straight graded stakes victory. "This little filly relaxed back there," said winning jockey Joe Bravo. "She saved all her energy until the turn for home. She exploded and really showed her true colors." Assistant trainer Ginny DePasquale said J'ray handled the conditions well and appreciated the long stretch of the course. "This filly gives 110 percent every time she runs. I knew she was going to run well," said DePasquale. "Joe [Bravo] gave her the perfect trip. She relaxed nicely on the backside. At first, I thought she was a little bit far back. She likes to be a little bit closer, but it worked out absolutely perfectly." Click for the brisnet.com chart, the brisnet.com PPs or the f2free brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree. Kamsin entered the history books alongside Mondrian (Ger) with a rare hat-trick of successes in the G1 Deutsches Derby, G1 Rheinland-Pokal and Grosser Preis von Baden after producing a powerful surge to deny Adlerflug here. In doing so, he emulated his sire, who also wore the Blankenese silks when completing the Derby-Grosser Preis double in the millennium year. Bar a below-par effort when fourth on quick ground in the G3 Bavarian Classic at Munich June 8, the bay has an enviable record which also includes Frankfurt's G3 Albert Von Metzler-Rennen May 4. Although he was actually seven-lengths second behind Oriental Tiger (Ger) in the Aug. 17 Rheinland-Pokal, the record books will show him as the winner following the disqualification of Oriental Tiger this week. Settled in rear early by Johan Victoire off the even tempo set by Lucarno (Dynaformer), he tracked Adlerflug as that favorite was committed by Fredrik Johansson at the top of the stretch and wore him down approaching the final furlong before drawing clear. Trainer Peter Schiergen said, "When winning the Derby he made all, but today he showed the speed we all knew he had. He could run once more this year, but where or when has to be decided on." Adlerflug's conditioner Jens Hirschberger was taking defeat on the chin. "He ran a good race, we just met a better horse today," he said. Positioned in a stalking second until seizing the initiative off the home turn, she answered every call under a final-quarter drive to turn down all challenges in game fashion. Indicating possible targets, trainer Jim Bolger revealed, "We'll discuss the options we've got for her for the rest of the season. Leading from the break, he maintained his advantage throughout and kept on bravely in the closing stages to hold the vain effort of Milanais. "He seems to love France and so do I," claimed the trainer's son and assistant Richard Hannon Jr. "He looked very comfortable on the lead just as he did when winning in Deauville last time. At one stage I thought Milanais was coming to beat him, but he kept finiding more and won safely in the end. It looks as though we might have a Guineas horse on our hands, but that is long term. The shorter-term aim is the Goffs Million [at The Curragh Sept. 28]." Click for the Racing Post chart. |

Hal and Patti Earnhardt's Indian Blessing (Indian Charlie) was scratched from Saturday's GI Ruffian H. at Belmont Park, but trainer Bob Baffert had another ace up his sleeve. Baffert sent out Tough Tiz's Sis, and the four-year-old proved an able representative for the stable. Up to press Rite Moment (Vicar) through an opening half in :45.03, the California shipper powered to the front after six furlongs in 1:09.04 and was all alone down the lane, splashing away to an impressive 12 1/4-length triumph. "She has been training very well, and all I told [jockey Edgar Prado] was to be sure to keep this filly's face clean," Baffert said. "She doesn't like dirt in her face. Last year at the Breeders' Cup [in the slop at Monmouth Park], she got caught in behind horses and had dirt in her face and it was a complete disaster." Seventh in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff last fall, Tough Tiz's Sis was runner-up in her next three outings, capping the streak in the Feb. 9 GI Santa Maria H. She followed up with wins in the Mar. 16 Harry Henson S. at Sunland Park and, after a break, in the May 4 GIII Hawthorne H. at Hollywood. In against unbeaten Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}) in her next two tries, the bay filly was second by a half-length in the July 5 GI Vanity H. and third by 6 1/4 lengths in the Aug. 2 GII Clement L. Hirsch H. at Del Mar. She'd failed to fire in three prior wet-track starts, but, kept in the clear by Edgar Prado yesterday, she proved she could handle the footing, winning as much the best. John Hettinger, a member of the Board of Trustees of the New York Racing Association and Chairman Emeritus of the Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation, died this morning after a lengthy illness. He was 74. "John was a renaissance man who retained all the old-fashioned virtues of straight talk, honesty and integrity," said Fasig-Tipton's Terence Collier. "During his tenure at Fasig-Tipton, he insisted that it be run with the same principals that he ran his life." In December of 1991, Hettinger personally supplied 40% ($2.4 million) of Fasig-Tipton's $6 million recapitalization plan, and also added $1.2million from trusts benefiting his sons, James and William. There will be no public ceremony. In December of 1991, Hettinger personally supplied 40 percent ($2.4 million) of Fasig-Tipton's $6 million recapitalization plan, and also added $1.2 million from trusts benefitting his sons, James and William. He maintained a 51 percent interest in Fasig-Tipton before it was sold to Synergy Investments Ltd. this April. Hettinger was an outspoken opponent of horse slaughter, forming Blue Horse Charities in 2001 to raise money for adoption and retirement programs and was an active member of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. “John personified our mission and made us a stronger, better organization, and we are honored to continue his efforts on behalf of our equine athletes,” said TRF Executive Director Diana Pikulski. “He was the Thoroughbred's strongest advocate and he took action to back his convictions. The TRF was honored to have his huge support and presence as a director.” Hettinger also “spent a great deal of time and money” in an effort to create legislation that would outlaw horse slaughter in the U.S., Collier said. “Certainly he was pleased with the closing of plants in Texas and Illinois, however, he was by no means satisfied and always felt that more could be done.” In addition to his wife Betty and his sons, Hettinger is survived by his three grandchildren: Caroline, Charles and Lilly. | El Corredor's Backseat Rhythm Determined in Garden City Updated: 4:39 PM ET (First posted: 2:12 PM ET)

She was good enough on the dirt to run second in the GI Frizette S. and third over a sloppy strip in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, but Backseat Rhythm has taken her game to a new level on the grass. A maiden winner on the lawn, the bay filly was third in a Gulfstream turf allowance Feb. 22 to open 2008, then switched back to the main track and was a distant fourth in the Mar. 2 GII Bonnie Miss S. The sophomore was back on the weeds after running third in a Belmont allowance test May 2, and showed her appreciation for the change with a six-length allowance score three weeks later. She failed to fire when seventh behind Pure Clan in the July 5 GI American Oaks, but made it three-for-five on the lawn in the Aug. 15 GII Lake Placid S. at Saratoga, recovering from a rough start to win going away. Still, the bettors needed some convincing, and sent her off the co-fourth choice in this field. Backseat Rhythm settled in fourth as raw Silk (Malibu Moon) led them along through six furlongs in 1:14.72. She circled the field at the top of the lane and brushed Pure Clan at the eighth pole, but, kept to a drive, fought her way to a narrow score. "She's by no means an Amazon, but she's got a great stride on her," trainer Pat Reynolds said. "It was great coming from that far back with no pace. She's a no-excuse filly. She either gets there or she doesn't, but she always gives you her best." Looking ahead, Reynolds added, "We're invited to the Queen Elizabeth II [GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland Oct. 11]. I hear that when you areinvited, they give you a free meal. "I don't want to gut her out, I want to keep her fresh for the Breeders' Cup Sprint," Baffert told Daily Racing Form. "Right now, I'd say I'm leaning toward Presque Isle Downs; three-quarters, that's her game right now, I'm not going to change it up. Yesterday's Group 1 action at Leopardstown and Haydock was lost to waterlogging, with the former track moving their G1 Irish Champion S. card to today. While Haydock was not able to be saved due to a total of 35 millimetres of rain in the preceding 24 hours, officials at Leopardstown remain optimistic that the transferred meeting will take place following a 7a.m. precautionary inspection. "We're very disappointed about today, but we're quite confident we'll be okay for tomorrow," explained Leopardstown's General Manager Tom Burke. "We're due dry weather today and tomorrow, so we're very hopeful. We decided we will inspect tomorrow morning, but it is soft ground at the moment. I'm sure in the final analysis, it will all work out." It was later announced that Haydock's G1 Sprint Cup will be moved to Saturday's St Leger card at Doncaster. | Belmont Barn Under Precautionary Quarantine Posted: 2:35 PM ET
Barn 38 on the Belmont backstretch has been placed under precautionary quarantine, after Smell My Carrots, a three-year-old maiden gelding, was euthanized after being found in his stall with a fever and unable to stand. With equine herpes one possible cause for the horse's illness, the decision was made to place the barn under quarantine. Horses in Barn 38 are being carefully monitored and are restricted from racing and shipping for the time being. They will be allowed to train after normal training hours on the nearby training track once the general horse population has cleared. Blood samples from the deceased horse have been drawn and sent to Kentucky. Test results are expected by Tuesday. Owned by Eugene Louglin and trained by John Candlin, Smell My Carrots was most recently eighth at Saratoga Aug. 22, his eighth career appearance. He was entered, but was scratched from Friday's seventh race. | Repriced's Close Out Gets Her First Graded Score Updated: 7:48 PM ET (First posted: 7:45 PM ET)

The bay filly coasted to an easy maiden win on the Fair Grounds turf in March, then shook off an eventful sixth-place finish in a Keeneland allowance test Apr. 23 and was second at Churchill May 16. The Florida-bred annexed an allowance in Louisville June 7, made it two in a row in the July 12 Audubon Oaks at Ellis Park and was coming off a runner-up effort behind the talented Ariege (Doneraile Court) in the Aug. 9 Madame Jumel S. at the Spa. Unhurried in the early going, Close Out rated in 10th as favored Lucky Copy cruised through the opening six furlongs in 1:12.24. Lucky Copy still had six lengths on the field at the eighth pole, but had hit the wall, and Close Out, despite racing erratically, caught her in the final strides and edged clear. "The distance was a big plus," jockey Jamie Theriot said. "The further she goes, the better she's going to be. [Lucky Copy] had a lot of speed and she was stopping the last eighth of a mile, and my filly was just getting moving." Jockey Garrett Gomez, on the runner-up, remarked, "She was pretty empty at the top of the lane, but she was still able to keep going.
