Ten City (Run Away and Hide) made good on his “TDN Rising Star” tag and impressive debut with a solid score in the GIII Bashford Manor S. Friday evening beneath the Twin Spires. Romping by seven lengths in his Keeneland unveiling Apr. 19, he was hammered down to 1-2 favoritism to take his record to two-for-two while receiving Lasix for the first time here.
Away well, the dark bay raced in a three-wide fourth early as longshot I'm Corfu (Corfu) and fellow “TDN Rising Star” Copper Bullet (More Than Ready) exchanged blows through an opening quarter in :21.97. Tugging his way up to run in a joint second with Copper Bullet on the backstretch, Ten City seized command at the top of the lane and quickly rolled clear. Copper Bullet seemed to be backing off approaching the far turn, but re-rallied in the stretch and chased after the chalk. However, Ten City was always going the better of the two and held clear by 1 1/2 lengths at the wire. Hardworkcleanlivin (Colonel John) rounded out the trifecta.
“I was so proud to pick a horse this talented out of the auction for only $12,000,” said trainer Ken McPeek. “This horse has shown a lot of talent throughout the early stages of his career. It's a horse that trainers dream to be around. I've sort of changed up my training over the last couple of years with these younger horses so there's a good chance we'll take it easy on him over the summer and wait to run him next in the [GIII] Iroquois [S. at Churchill Sept. 19].”
“Kenny [McPeek] has always been high on this colt,” said winning rider Robby Albarado. “He told me once he gets his legs stretched out he'll come with a run. I saw the horse in front was stopping rather quickly so, I got my horse in a good position and everything worked out well today.”
“It was just a tough trip,” said Copper Bullet's rider Florent Geroux. “He worked his way up there on the inside and there was a lot of stuff going on in very a short field. He ran great. He was probably the best today, but the trip didn't help.”
Pedigree Notes:
Ten City, a $12,000 FTKOCT yearling purchase, is the third graded stakes winner for his sire Run Away and Hide, who stands at breeder John Phillips's Darby Dan Farm. Phillips bred the winner's unraced dam Maiden America, as well as his second and third dams. Maiden America produced one foal prior to Ten City, the now 3-year-old filly Full of Joy (Kitten's Joy), who broke her maiden for Phillips, his partners Kip & George Elser and trainer Tom Proctor at second asking at Delaware June 10. The 7-year-old Maiden America is also responsible for a yearling colt by Shackleford and produced a Tapiture filly Feb. 25 of this year, which is, coincidentally, the same day she foaled the Shackleford colt in 2016.
