Sulamani (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}–Soul Dream, by Alleged), a six-time Grade/Group 1 winner in five countries, was euthanised recently at Yorton Farm Stud, the farm revealed on its website.
Sulamani epitomised the term globetrotter. Bred by the Niarchos Family and campaigned by them initially with trainer Pascal Bary, Sulamani won the G1 Prix du Jockey Club in 2002. He was purchased by Godolphin after finishing second to that operation's Marienbard (Ire) (Caerleon) in that year's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, and he collected the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic in his first start in the blue for trainer Saeed bin Suroor. He traveled to the U.S. later that year to add the GI Arlington Million and GI Turf Classic Invitational, and in his final year on the track in 2004 he won the G1 Juddmonte International and the GI Canadian International.
Sulamani spent three years at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud in the UK before transferring to that operation's Haras du Logis in France for a further three years. He had spent the last seven seasons at Yorton Farm Stud in the UK, standing for £2,500. His top-rated runner was Godolphin's Mastery (GB), winner of the 2010 G1 Hong Kong Vase, and he sired four Group 1 winners during shuttle trips to South America. His best produce in the National Hunt sphere was last year's Grand National winner Rule The World.
David Futter, owner of Yorton, said, “The Yorton team have been hit hard by his sudden demise. We will always remember him with great affection and be thankful for having the chance to stand him. Sulamani's arrival at Yorton represented a tremendous milestone for us being the first stallion we stood in partnership with Rathbarry. Not only was he truly one of the toughest racehorses on the track but this strength was also passed down to his stock.”
