The Ohio Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners will revive the Ohio Mixed Sale last conducted a decade ago, according to a release from the organization. The sale will take place at Majestic Farm in Batavia, with the potential for as many as 146 lots, including 37 weanlings, 39 yearlings, 50 broodmares and 20 horses of racing age.
“With the upswing in purses Ohio has experienced over recent years the time is right to revitalize a sale in the state,” stated O.T.B.O. Executive Director John Engelhardt, who took over that position in January of this year. “In addition to the on-track purses growing, the state incentives in place for breeder and stallion awards are giving owners and breeders a good chance now to see a return on their investment. I do want to point out that this sale is open to horses from all states and not exclusive to Ohio-breds. Odds are that the majority of horses that are sold will eventually race in the state, giving more breeders a chance to benefit from the state's award program.”
The Dec. 3 date was voted on to allow for supplemental entry for horses that did not sell or meet their reserve at one of the fall sales in Kentucky. Horses will be allowed on the grounds for inspection on Saturday, Dec. 2. The sale date was also agreed upon because there is no live racing in the state that day, which will allow owners and trainers at the Mahoning Valley meet to attend. The sale will likely begin at 1 p.m., though the board will meet again to finalize certain details.
