The 4-year-old season of last year's Cartier Horse of the Year Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has suffered a further blow after trainer Aidan O'Brien revealed on Sunday that the filly will require further time on the sidelines.
Minding, the winner of five Group 1s last year-and seven overall–including a Guineas and an Oaks, picked up an injury after a winning seasonal debut in G2 Mooresbridge S. at Naas on May 1. O'Brien said, “We had Minding pencilled in to start back [in exercise] on Monday but when John [Halley] x-rayed her, he wasn't happy to do that. He wanted to leave her another month.”
“We'll leave her another month, but if we go another month we could run out of time, I'm not sure,” O'Brien added. “When John said to wait, we just have to wait. We'll wait and see. John always checks them before they start back and everything was in place to start off, but when he checked her he wasn't happy.”
In a further blow to the stable, O'Brien also confirmed that G2 Dahlia S. winner Somehow (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) had to be euthanised after suffering an inoperable fracture while training.
“Unfortunately Somehow has suffered a fatal injury,” he said. “She got a fracture behind on her cannon bone and we were unable to fix it. It's a real pity as she was such a good filly, and had progressed well this season.”
