Irap Euthanized

Reddam Racing's MGSW Irap (Tiznow–Silken Cat, by Storm Cat) has been euthanized after contracting laminitis, trainer Doug O'Neill and owners Paul and Zillah Reddam announced Friday.

“It is with great sadness that we heard [Friday] that Irap has developed laminitis,” the Reddams said. “Not wanting him to suffer, we have made the decision to euthanize him. We would like to thank Dr. Dean Richardson and his team at New Bolton for doing their best with Irap, as well as Dr. Ryan Carpenter for showing his compassion by jumping on a plane when he learned of Irap's injury. We also want to thank Doug O'Neill and his entire staff for the wonderful care they took of Irap throughout his racing career. Irap provided many thrills over the past year and he changed from maiden to graded stakes winner overnight. He developed into a top race horse who carried himself with tremendous dignity and a level of class that is rare. We count ourselves lucky to have been part of his life for an all too brief time.”

Runner-up in both the GI CashCall Futurity S. and GIII Robert B. Lewis S. last term as a maiden, Irap earned his diploma earlier this year with a double-digit upset in the GII Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland in April. Well-beaten in the GI Kentucky Derby, the $300,000 OBSMAR grad returned to winning ways with consecutive victories in the GIII Ohio Derby and GIII Indiana Derby this summer. Third in the GI Travers S. Aug. 26, the bay was last seen finishing second in the GI Pennsylvania Derby Sept. 23. His record stands at 13-3-4-2 with earnings of $1,672,600.

Bred by Aaron and Marie Jones, Irap is out of Canadian champion Silken Cat (Storm Cat), making him a half-brother to champion sprinter and top sire Speightstown (Gone West). This is also the family of graded winners Grey Hawk (Tapit) and Hear the Ghost (Ghostzapper).
