Silvestre de Sousa was for the second time named champion jockey in Britain on Saturday, besting last year's champion Jim Crowley with 155 winners. Crowley rode 111, and Ryan Moore was third with 103. De Sousa, who also won the championship in 2015, accepted his award at Ascot on Champions Day.
“It was my target, I am delighted to get there,” said De Sousa. “I am very proud to win for a second time, I've worked very hard, it is great. It is a long season, but I have been fit and healthy, I had a clear run through and am so pleased to have had the chance. I am delighted to be here today for the award–it is Champions Day, there should be a great atmosphere.”
Looking forward, the rider added, “I don't really have any plans for the winter, I will be in Britain until Christmas and the New Year, then I will go abroad. Then I will get ready for the next season–I hope to ride a few winners again next year. I will take it as it comes and I hope to be busy again.”
