Bricks and Mortar closed with a powerful late rush to remain unbeaten in three career starts. Outfooted in the early going, Bricks and Mortar dropped back to trail the field as Secretary at War set the tempo through fractions of :23.98 and :47.89 with favored Big Handsome a tracking third along the rail. Bricks and Mortar was still last at the top of the lane, but was gaining momentum with every stride. Tipped out five wide at midstretch, the dark bay closed relentlessly and swept to the lead in the shadow of the wire. Big Handsome, forced to weave in and out in search of racing room in the stretch, finally found a seam to run through along the rail and got up for second.

“He ran really, really, well,” commented Cherie DeVaux, assistant to winning trainer Chad Brown. “The pace wasn't that fast and Joel found a good position on the rail. When he found his way out, he really accelerated finished strong to the wire.”

Bricks and Mortar debuted with a 1 3/4-length victory going 1 1/16 miles over the Gulfstream lawn Feb. 18 and returned with a 3/4-length victory over the Manila's course and trip June 9.

Beyond the Waves, a half-sister to the dam of Grade I winner Bordonaro (Memo {Chi}) and Grade I placed Miss Empire (Empire Maker), produced a filly by Animal Kingdom in 2016 and was barren to a Quality Road cover this year. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
