BRETON ROCK (IRE), g, 7, Bahamian Bounty (GB)–Anna's Rock (Ire), by Rock of Gibraltar (Ire).

O-John Cook; B-George Kent (IRE); T-David Simcock; J-Andrea Atzeni. £170,130. Lifetime Record: 30-10-4-9, £575,557.

Let go at 50-1 despite the fact that he had finished third in the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury May 20, Breton Rock who is a true specialist at this trip produced a rare rattle down the outer to inhale all his rivals in the space of just over a furlong and record a career-best under Andrea Atzeni. Anchored at the tail of the field as Home of the Brave (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) assumed his customary position at the head of affairs, the veteran had around seven lengths to make up on that leader as the last furlong neared but he produced a surge down the outside to get to the front in the final yards and beat him by a half length, with a short head back to Suedois (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}) in third. “I didn't expect it at all, none of us did,” his rider commented. “David [Simcock] told me to drop him out last and pick up the pieces and he picked them all up. I thought they went quick early on and then steadied it at the top of the hill and he picked up really well. I thought the ground would be too quick for him to be honest, but he's a gentleman of a horse.”
