Following storms and torrential rain in the Toronto area Saturday afternoon, Woodbine decided to cancel the remainder of Saturday's 13-race King's Plate card. The track conducted the first five races on the undercard before forcing to cancel because of inclement weather.
According to a statement by Woodbine on X this afternoon, “In the interest of safety for our horses and horse people, Woodbine Entertainment has cancelled the remainder of Saturday's live racing card due to unsafe racing conditions caused by heavy rains in the Greater Toronto Area.”
Saturday's card has been rescheduled for Friday, Aug. 23.
“The safety of our horses, riders, horse people, and all racing participants is paramount to Woodbine,” said Michael Copeland, CEO Woodbine Entertainment. “We understand the disappointment for everyone who joined us today, including our great fans, but it was the right decision, one made in concert with the HBPA, jockeys, and veterinarians, to cancel the races.
“We want to thank everyone for their understanding of the decision that was made, and hope we can welcome you back this Friday, where we will crown another Plate winner and add their name to a list of great champions.”
