Undefeated filly Volpe Veloce (Aus) (Foxwedge {Aus}) made it six straight wins, with a tally in the 1600-metre G2 Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic S. at Ellerslie Monday (Video). Tucked neatly back against the rail until halfway, the dark bay cruised off the fence turning for home, and came charging five wide to get up by a measured half-length over Storytime (NZ) (Savabeel {Aus}). The professional galloper will target the G1 Levin Classic at Trentham Jan. 14.
“I hid away in the jockeys' room and watched it by myself,” said winning trainer Graham Richardson to nzracing.co.nz. “I'm absolutely stoked for her and my owners. It's a big thrill, just fantastic. Her long term goal is the [G1] New Zealand Oaks and she might go to Trentham for the mile down there [G1 Randwick Meats Levin Classic Jan. 14] as well. It's all about winning and getting more black-type.”
Already a group winner when taking out the G3 Eulogy S. at Awapuni most recently Dec. 10, Volpe Veloce also captured the Listed Castletown S. going 1200 metres at Wanganui as a 2-year-old. She is the second group winner for her young sire Foxwedge (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), after MGSW Foxplay (Aus) landed the G2 Fitzy & Wippa's Fast & Furious S. Sept. 3 and later followed up in the G2 Tea Rose S. Sept. 17.
Added winning hoop Johnathan Parkes, “Her attitude is so professional, she's just a gem to ride. Once I got out she did the rest. I think she's a filly that will definitely stay. She is very relaxed in her races.”
Volpe Veloce has taken the leads with 14 points in the NZ Bloodstock Filly of the Year series, with G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas heroine La Diosa (NZ) (So You Think {NZ}) in second with 12.
