Vitality Much the Best in Prince Of Wales

Stronach Stables's Vitality (Street Boss), sixth at 38-1 in the King's Plate Stakes Aug. 23, jumped up significantly in his dirt debut to deliver a powerful win in Tuesday's Prince of Wales Stakes, the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

Having just broken his maiden two starts back for trainer Harold Ladouceur at Woodbine July 19, the chestnut gelding lined up as a 9-1 shot here. Drawn just outside of the filly Airosa (Uncle Mo), he settled in the second flight of runners past the wire for the first time. Fifth as Airosa showed the way, but boxed in through the half in :47.19, Vitality had to switch out wide to take aim at the filly who still led around the far turn. Locked and loaded at the quarter pole, he swung widest of all the contenders and closed stoutly down the center of the track. He drifted in as he drew even with Airosa, but made it a one-horse race to the line to win for fun.

Ladouceur told Daily Racing Form that Vitality would run back in the final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Breeders' Stakes over 1 1/2 miles on the grass Sept. 29 at Woodbine. “He has a lot of confidence,” Ladouceur told DRF. “This is a booster for him.”

Vitality becomes the 73rd stakes winner worldwide for Street Boss. The winner's unraced dam Belissimo had a filly by Goldencents this year and was bred back to Epicenter. Belissimo brought $25,000 from Dan Churilla in foal to Goldencents at the 2023 KEENOV sale.
