'TDN Rising Star' Barry Lee became the third first-crop stakes winner for Violence with this cozy victory.
Taken a hold of early on by Horacio Karamanos, the slight betting favorite settled in mid-division early on and was allowed to improve his position nearing the turn. Barry Lee rolled up wide to challenge three abreast at the five-sixteenths, hit the front in upper stretch and did enough late to secure the victory. Captivating Moon, the half-brother to Grade I-winning turfer Vacare (Lear Fan), had just one beat through the opening 4 1/2 furlongs, was taken wide for the drive and was on his incorrect lead for most of the stretch before his rally fell short.
Barry Lee was all the rage as the 11-10 chalk for his five-furlong bow at Laurel July 14 and ran to the advance billing to score by 6 1/2 lengths to become a Rising Star. That effort earned the dark bay 7-4 favoritism for the GII Saratoga Special S. Aug. 14, but he'd run his race by the time heads were turned for home and beat just one of his eight other rivals.
The most expensive of his sire's 38 weanlings to sell in 2015, Barry Lee was bought back out of the Keeneland September sale and fetched $380,000 at this year's OBS March sale after covering an eighth of a mile in :9 4/5. That price was the second- highest among the 41 Violence juveniles reported as sold this term.
Barry Lee's Sky Mesa half-sister sells through the Summerfield agency as hip 2121 at Keeneland September next week, while the mare's 2017 produce is a filly by Constitution. Light of a Star was bred back to Mineshaft. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
