Unbeaten Society Becomes Latest Gun Runner-Sired SW for Asmussen

Society handled the stretch out and class hike Saturday evening to become the 12th stakes winner for her fast-starting sire–at least seven of which have been trained by Gun Runner's Hall of Fame conditioner Steve Asmussen. Belying odds of nearly 28-1 when unveiled by Wayne Mackey going 6 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland last October, the Peter Blum homebred was subsequently transferred to the Asmussen barn and resurfaced to take a first-level allowance going the same distance in the slop one race after the GI Kentucky Oaks May 6.

Two turns seemed unlikely to be a roadblock on paper, but Society was a bit keen early here before settling under Tyler Gaffalione to post splits of :24.81 and :49.37. Miss Yearwood made a big move on the final bend to challenge, and the pair turned for home glued to each other. Society was up for the tussle, and punched back resolutely along the fence to prove best.

“She was very impressive and we're really proud of her to run like that trying two turns for the first time,” said assistant trainer Scott Blasi. “She ran well here in her last start sprinting and showed today she could handle the added distance. We'll see what's next but we're very pleased with her effort today.”

The winner's dam is a half to GSW and GISP Pleasant Prince (Indy King). This is the female family of GSWs Mark One, Rookie Sensation, Holy Helena and fellow Asmussen pupil Holy Boss.

Etiquette's now 2-year-old Union Rags colt was a $37,000 KEESEP buyback. Next in the pipeline is a Street Sense filly, followed by an Omaha Beach colt.
