'There Is Plenty Of Opportunity' – Beeby Upbeat About February Sale

With a selection of quality Flat and National Hunt weanlings, 2-year-olds, horses in training and breeding stock on offer, there was little surprise that Goffs chief executive Henry Beeby said the February Sale features something for every type of buyer on Wednesday and Thursday.

The first live sale of 2023 at Goffs, the February sale boasts 447 lots including supplementary entries, with leading pinhookers and buyers reported to be on the ground inspecting the stock on Tuesday.

Beeby described himself as optimistic of a productive trade over the two days, pointing to the opportunity available to every buyer, including the British and Irish pinhookers who have done notably well at the February Sale in recent years.

He said, “We have a good mixed catalogue and we are coming back after a strong autumn so we are hopeful of picking up where we left off. There are plenty of opportunities for pinhookers here and all of the professionals have been here on Monday inspecting the stock and working their way through the catalogue.

“There is a really good bunch of yearlings and there are some great opportunities for buyers here, as there has been in the past. Hopefully there will be plenty of interest. I expect that the fashionably-bred horses will sell well and it might get a bit skinnier underneath that but there will be plenty of opportunity for people, that's for sure.”

A good recent example of pinhookers picking out profit at this sale came last year when the WH Bloodstock team turned their €38,000 Kuroshio (Aus) colt into a £120,000 smash hit at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. That tremendous touch was secured in just over six months and Beeby says that he is confident similar opportunities await buyers this year.

He added, “I've looked at a good few horses today for Wednesday and Thursday, some who were meant to be here in November but didn't make it for minor reasons, so this sale is a good backup plan for the vendors of those types of horses as this is a vibrant sale. Pinhookers always make sure to be here for the February Sale and there is a notably strong contingent of English buyers present. We've a good selection of National Hunt youngsters, too, so it is a sale that will appeal to a broad spectrum of people. We are hoping for a good start to the year.”

The two-day February Sale kicks off at 10 a.m. on Wednesday with a Berkshire (Ire) half-brother to recent Grade 1-placed Adamantly Chosen (Ire) and Galileo (Ire) mares Myzoon (Ire), Art Story (Ire), Music And Dance (GB), Sweet And Lovely (Ire) and Red Azalea (Ire) some of the interesting lots on offer.
