GI Winners Salty and Dacita at Don Alberto Corporation

Don Alberto Corporation spent millions to get their hands on GI winners Salty and Dacita. We visited them at Don Alberto Farm and met their new foals. Dacita is a daughter of Scat Daddy, and is the leading earner for her dam Daja (Chi) (Seeker's Reward). She was a dual champion in Chile before moving to the United States and into the barn of top turf trainer Chad Brown as a 4-year-old. She raced for three years in the States, claiming four graded stakes including two Grade I races in...

Una Bella d'Oro: Don Alberto's New Golden Girl

Unique Bella was the first GI winner for Don Alberto Stables, but she would go on to become a two-time Eclipse champion. This year, she had her first foal-- a filly by Medaglia d'Oro named Una Bella d'Oro. The daughter of champion sire Tapit retired in the summer of 2018 as a millionaire with eight graded stakes wins and two Eclipse awards to her credit. The towering gray filly was a fan favorite throughout her career and a top earner for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. She was sent to Don Alberto's...

Guineas Win Is Sweet For Sweeter Still

When Kameko (Kitten's Joy) won the G1 2000 Guineas on June 6, he made a fairly strong case for perseverance. His dam, the well-bred graded stakes winner Sweeter Still (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), had been the co-second highest priced lot at Keeneland's January Sale in 2014 at $750,000 in foal to Galileo (Ire), carrying her second foal and bought by Phyllis Wyeth to breed to her GI Belmont S. winner Union Rags. Four years later, Sweeter Still was plucked out of the ring at Keeneland November by the little-known...

We spoke to Wayne and Cathy Sweezey about their new addition. While she enjoys the care-free life of a newborn now, the young filly has much to live up to someday when she steps onto the track. Her mother, Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song), is a three-time graded stakes winner and Breeders' Cup Champion. Her full sister, TDN Rising Star Unique Bella...

A Tribute to La Verdad

The horse racing industry learned the tragic passing of Eclipse Champion La Verdad's passing on May 10th. We pay tribute to her memory and look forward to cheering on her foals someday soon. La Verdad (Yes It's True), the 2015 Champion Female Sprinter, has been euthanized due to complications from colic, according to a statement issued by her owner, Sheila Rosenblum. The 10-year-old mare had recently foaled a colt by Into Mischief at Vivien Malloy's Edition Farm in Hyde Park, New York. Rosenblum posted a statement on Facebook, which read,...

Songbird Celebrates Her Second Mother's Day

After foaling a filly by Arrogate in 2019, Songbird now has another beautiful filly by Tapit. Katie Ritz checks in with the superstar mare at Timber Town Farm, just in time for Mother's Day. Of all the jaw-dropping feats that a Thoroughbred is able to accomplish, perhaps nothing is quite as miraculous as watching a fierce, powerful racehorse transform to fill the role of motherhood. Wayne Sweezey, who owns and operates Timber Town Stables alongside his wife Cathy, has watched this dramatic role change hundreds of times. But one mare...

Fastest US GI-Winning Galileo Filly & 3/4 Sister to Magical at Fasig-Tipton

Photo Call's credentials on the racetrack alone make her a very valuable commodity. She's a two-time Grade I winner with victories in the GI Rodeo Drive S. and the GI First Lady S., where she defeated Tepin (Bernstein). Add in that she is not only one of three Galileos in the sale, but his fastest-winning daughter in the U.S. by virtue of her 109 Beyer figure in the First Lady. In fact, the only Galileo filly or mare to run faster in the U.S. was Photo Call's three-quarter sister Magical,...
