Getaway Car (c, 2, Curlin-Surrender Now, by Morning Line), named by Katie Ryan (Tom Ryan's wife) after a Taylor Swift-song, topped the charts on debut and earned a 'TDN Rising Star' at Del Mar on Saturday. Spotlighted in the Saturday edition of TDN's Racing Insights, the $700,000 Keeneland September grad sported several solid works over the past month in Arcadia for trainer Bob Baffert.
The 6-5 shot here did not disappoint his supporters as he established a healthy lead up the backstretch. Giving chase around the far turn was Todd Fincher trainee Smash It (Star Guitar), but the chestnut was unable decrease Getaway Car's margin by the top of the lane. Cruising along past the eighth pole, jockey Juan Hernandez geared his mount down as the pair got their picture taken by 3 1/4 lengths.
The first registered foal out of SW Surrender Now (Morning Line), the winner has a yearling half-brother by Charlatan, who Campbell Stables bought for $285,000 at last year's Keeneland November Sale, and his dam was bred to Nyquist for next year. A half-sister to GSW Red Flag (Tamarkuz), Surrender Now was a $220,000 purchase for Rockingham Ranch at the March 2017 Barretts 2-year-olds In Training Sale.
This was the 28th 'TDN Rising Star' for the influential Curlin (by Smart Strike).
