Sam-Son Farm homebred Kitten’s Girl (f, 2, Kitten’s Joy-Song of the Lark, by Seeking the Gold) ran to the money as the 4-5 favorite with an impressive, come-from-behind tally on the Woodbine lawn Friday afternoon, good for ‘TDN Rising Star’ honors.
The bay turned in a four-furlong bullet in 48 1/5 (1/13) around the dogs over a yielding Woodbine training turf course for trainer Malcolm Pierce Aug. 25.
Not off to the sharpest of beginnings from her inside draw, she raced in ninth in this 12-horse field through opening fractions of :23.16 and :45.99. Kept in the clear on the outside on the far turn, she began to gobble up ground while about four wide. Kitten’s Girl kept her momentum rolling down the lane, and came flying over the top to win going away by 3 1/2 lengths despite switching to her left lead late. I’ll Take the Gold (Goldencents) was second.
Kitten’s Girl is a half-sister to Canadian Horse of the Year and Canadian champion 3-year-old colt Up With the Birds (Stormy Atlantic), GISW, $1,870,376; and Speightsong (Speightstown), SW, $343,954. Her dam Song of the Lark is also represented by a Medaglia d’Oro filly of 2017. She was bred to Uncle Mo this year. Kitten’s Girl’s second dam is Canadian champion and 1991 GI Spinster S. heroine Wilderness Song (Wild Again).
