Anonymity (Tapit), a $600,000 Keeneland September buy by powerhouse LNJ Foxwoods, did anything but stay under the radar in a powerful debut performance at Del Mar Friday evening worthy of the ‘TDN Rising Star’ distinction. The full-sister to Hansen, Ch. 2yo Colt, GISW, $1,818,805 was dismissed at 9-1 for Hall of Famer Richard Mandella–who rarely wins first out–showed good speed to zoom to the front while carrying her head high. Unable to tuck in, she was headed approaching the turn by odds-on chalk Pretty Owl (Into Mischief), but regained the lead from that one past the quarter pole and a :44.75 half. She left the chalk in the dust after several left-handers in upper stretch, and built her edge to 3 3/4 lengths on the line in a snappy 1:09.56. Fellow newcomer Meiji (Warrior’s Reward) completed the exacta. Pretty Owl faded to fourth. Breeder Kendall Hansen acquired the winner’s dam Stormy Sunday (Sir Cat) for $5,000 out of a winning Turfway debut in 2005. She won two of three starts for Hansen and trainer Dennis Bruce before producing Tapanna (Tapit), an earner of $174,087 in 51 career starts. Hansen was her second foal. Stormy Sunday’s 2016 foal, a filly by Frankel (GB), was bought back for $725,000 at last year’s Keeneland November sale. She produced another Tapit colt last term before returning to the Gainesway stalwart.
