Convivial (English Channel), a half-brother to GI Belmont Derby-winning millionaire Force the Pass (Speightstown, GISW, $1,262,154), went last to first with a sweeping wide move to capture his debut at Monmouth and earned ‘TDN Rising Star’ status. The bay worked three times in the month of June down the road at Colts Neck Stables and was a bit overlooked in the wagering at odds of 12-1. Away a bit slowly, he lagged in the early stages as a longshot set the pace in the clear through fractions of :23.92 and :47.72. Produced down the center of the strip with a strong rally turning for home, the colt responded readily and rallied to win going away by 2 1/4 lengths. Second-time starter Finglas (First Samurai) also closed well to complete the exacta. The winner’s dam Social Queen captured two graded stakes races for this owner/trainer and is herself a half to the dam of MGISP Wonder Gal (Tiz Wonderful). This is also the family of GISW Perfect Drift (Dynaformer).
