Debonairly placed herself among the favourites for the Jan. 14 A$2.5-million Magic Millions 2YO Classic with an ultra-impressive debut win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. Taking command from the break in the 1100 metre maiden, the bay nursed a lead of 1 1/2 lengths while traveling off the fence through the early stages. She exploded clear when given a shake of the reins by rider Kerrin McEvoy at the top of the lane, and had put 4 1/2 lengths between herself and runner-up Te Amo (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) by the time she hit the line under wraps. Debonairly was cut from A$26 to A$11 for the Magic Millions. “She’s done it really well there,� McEvoy told Sky Racing. “She trialled-up nicely but she’s improved since. She didn’t give me that sort of feel when I trialled her. She was on song today and ready to pump. She was out quickly and was never in doubt.�

Debonairly was purchased by Waterhouse and agent Marette Farrell for A$320,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, and is the first horse campaigned Down Under by Speedway Stables, the moniker for U.S.-based business partners Peter Fluor and KC Weiner. Fluor and Weiner are relatively new investors but enjoyed Grade I success in 2015 with Hard Not To Like, who they purchased in training for $1.5-million and sold the following year for $2.2-million. After signing for Debonairly at Magic Millions in January, Farrell–who advises Speedway Stables with John Adger–told the TDN, “It’s really just a fun thing for them to do right now. They’re not planning to have a satellite operation or anything down here. They’ll learn a little about the racing, they’ll love Gai, and it’s an opportunity for them to come down and see what it’s all about. They have a voracious appetite for the business. Debonairly is a half-sister to Corsaire (Aus) (Anabaa), a two-time stakes winner who was second in the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude. A sprinkling of stakes winners appears under the second dam, headed by German Group 1 winner Catella (Ger) (Generous {Ire}), who produced the U.S. Grade III winner Caprice (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}). Multiple German champion and six-time Group 1 winner Glint Of Gold (GB) (Mill Reef) appears under the third dam, as does Britain’s champion older horse Diamond Shoal (GB) (Mill Reef), whose three Group 1 wins included the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Crystal Choir’s yearling colt by Zoustar (Aus) is catalogued as lot 745 at next month’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale, and she was barren this year after being covered by All Too Hard (Aus).
