Exactly 52 weeks ago, a 2-year-old colt owned in part by James Harron, trained by Peter and Paul Snowden and debuting off a barrier trial win at Randwick two weeks prior registered a three-length victory in the Listed Breeders’ Plate at the Sydney oval. That colt, named Capitalist (Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}), would go on to victory in the G1 Golden Slipper S. in the Australian autumn, and connections unveiled another live hope in the form of Khan Saturday afternoon at Randwick. A Queensland-bred–like Capitalist–Khan was consigned to the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by his breeder Glenlogan Park Stud and was purchased by Harron for A$260,000. A little slow to begin in his 850-metre trial Sept. 19, the blaze-faced chestnut improved his position to be just behind the speed turning in. Blake Shinn waited to pop the question and the colt scraped in to ‘win’ by a neck (video), but he was the second choice in the Breeders’ Plate to Condor Heroes (Aus) (Not a Single Doubt {Aus}), whose clocking over the same extended four-furlong distance of :50.52 was fastest on the day and 0.68 quicker than the time posted by Khan. Condor Heroes led soon after the start and traveled strongly into the stretch while Shinn had Khan buried in traffic with plenty to do turning for home. Even when the gaps came for Khan with 300 metres to travel, he was slow to switch leads and one-paced, but he let down in earnest at the furlong grounds and powered home late to score by 1 1/4 lengths. “He has a pedigree that suggests he will get a lot further and he probably showed that today when the further he went the better he got, Peter Snowden said. “He is a very exciting colt and he has the ability to match those looks.
