Ami’s Mesa was the talk of the town prior to her career unveiling and made her post-time odds of 3-5 look like the value of the day with an effortless victory, becoming a ‘TDN Rising Star.’ The dark bay was away from the gate a bit slowly after bumping with fellow firster Cleopatra’s Gold (Mineshaft) and settled to race in midpack as Artilla (Artie Schiller) led through fractions of :23 2/5 and :47 flat. Left with significant work to do on the final bend, Ami’s Mesa accelerated with remarkable ease and swept to the front entering the lane. The filly pulled clear under minimal urging from Luis Contreras and reported home eight lengths ahead of the aforementioned Cleopatra’s Gold, who was 5 1/2 lengths to the good of the rest of the field. The homebred winner, who is a half to Ami’s Holiday (Harlan’s Holiday), GSW, $755,270, campaigns for the same owner and trainer combo as fellow ‘Rising Star’ and GIII Mazarine S. heroine Gamble’s Ghost (Ghostzapper). She became the fourth winner from as many starters and third debut winner out of Victorious Ami, who produced a colt by Exchange Rate in 2014 and was bred back to Into Mischief this spring.
