Sold for $50,000 as a yearling at the 2004 Keeneland January sale, Speed of Sound breezed a quarter mile in :21 2/5 ahead of this year's OBS February sale and made $550,000, the second highest price at the event. Favored at 2-5 to provide an immediate return on that investment, the New York-bred was a bit slow into stride, but edged to the front from between horses at the quarter pole. From there, the chestnut was under hand urging from Edgar Prado to prevail by five lengths over Extra Bend (Twining). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $25,800.
