Overcontrol first made headlines when topping the OBS April 2-Year-Old Sale at $725,000 (:10 1/5), and lived up to expectations for his high-profile connections with a powerful debut score here. Overcontrol compiled a steady worktab at Todd Pletcher's Palm Beach Downs base--including a five-furlong move in 1:01 2/5 (2/9) Dec. 14--and was backed as the 1-2 chalk. Not off to the quickest of beginnings, the 1-2 chalk was ridden a bit early and quickly responded to jockey John Velazquez to press from the outside in third through an opening quarter in :22.92. He took over with ease while in hand on the far turn, opened up a six-length advantage in the stretch and was geared down late en route to a facile 4 1/4-length decision. Fellow firster Centauro Star (Indian Charlie), well-backed at 5-2, overcame a poor break to finish a clear-cut second. It was another 10 1/4 lengths back to Man of Fashion (Corinthian) in third. Overcontrol is the most recent foal produced by the stakes-winning mare Ready for Fortune, who finished second in a pair of graded stakes races in New York.
