Stonestreet homebred Atreides--produced by the GI Prioress S. and GI Test S. heroine Dream Rush--stayed perfect while annexing his stakes debut in style here. Favored at 1-5, the half-brother to GI Frizette S. heroine and GI Mother Goose S. runner-up Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy) recovered nicely after getting pretty roughed up at the start. He raced in third through an opening quarter in :23.95 and began to turn up the heat on the far turn. Atreides took the lead shortly thereafter and opened daylight in the stretch to win by a pole. Atreides entered off a pair of facile wins versus older horses at Gulfstream Park. A runaway debut winner when coming within .57 of champion Big Drama's six-furlong track record July 12, Atreides added a 6 1/2-furlong optional claimer in Hallandale Aug. 10. "It's fun--I've never had a 3-year-old this good," trainer Marty Wolfson revealed. "Chaposa Springs [heroine of the 1995 GI Test S.], filly-wise, was great, but I never had a colt this good." Wolfson added, "He was easing him up at the sixteenth-pole, so it's hard to say how fast he would have run, but I'm really not concerned with time. I'm just concerned about the way he did it." Jockey Edgard Zayas has been aboard Atreides in all three of his career starts. "He's just a different class of horse," Zayas commented. "He has speed, but at the same time, you can rate him. That's pretty good, because he can go to the lead the same way he can come from behind." Wolfson said that no decision would be made about Atreides' next start until he talks with owner Barbara Banke.
