An A$165,000 yearling purchase by agent James Harron and Snowden Racing at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January, Capitalist made that sum look like a bargain Saturday when cruising to a first-out score in Royal Randwick’s Listed Breeders’ Plate, earning ‘TDN Rising Star’ status. Favored at 4-6, the chestnut raced freely early while sitting fifth on the outside. Pulling his way up to join the frontrunners at the top of the lane, he hit the lead at the 250 meter mark under a motionless Blake Shinn and won eased up by three lengths from stablemate Detective (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}). "Wow, what an outstanding performance," Shinn told Breednet.com.au. "He won with authority; he’s an outstanding 2-year-old. Full credit to Peter and Paul Snowden who trained him beautifully for today and well done to the guys, James Harron and Newgate Farm and a big team of owners they have put together buying these horses, and I think they have found a really smart horse here." Harron expanded on the business plan behind the ownership venture, which includes the rising force Newgate Farm and the estate of the late Edmund Bateman as well as his wife Belinda, who raced the likes of Group 1 winners Foxwedge (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and Wandjina (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}). "We set out to purchase some beautiful colts that would hopefully become stallion prospects; we’ve got a long way to go but it’s a lovely way to start," Harron told Breednet.com.au. "We’ve always gone after types, number one, first and foremost. He was a ripping type, very early, very precocious and just handles everything very well. The plan is probably for a short spell and head to the Magic Millions in January." The Breeders’ Plate is often an informative pointer to future big-race success. This year’s G1 Golden Slipper winner Vancouver (Aus) (Medaglia d’Oro) earned his Rising Star tag in this race last year, and it was also won by 2-year-old Triple Crown winner Pierro (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}) in 2011.
