'TDN Rising Star' Muth Back On Track With Score In Shared Belief Stakes At Del Mar

Early Kentucky Derby favorite Muth faced several twists and turns earlier in the 2024 season. Despite winning the GII San Vincente Stakes in January and the GI Arkansas Derby in March, Muth was precluded from running on the First Saturday in May due to his trainer's forced exclusion from the Classic over the past three seasons. Shipped to Pimlico two weeks later for the GI Preakness, the colt spiked a temperature which forced him out of the second jewel of the Triple Crown, shuttling him to the sidelines. Given plenty...

Wynstock Edges Cornell In Los Alamitos Derby Photo

Back at the site of his GII Los Alamitos Futurity upset last December, Wynstock returned to the Los Alamitos winner's circle Saturday in perhaps the most unlikely way. Entered off three straight disappointing efforts in the GIII Southwest Stakes, the GI Santa Anita Derby and most recently, the Desert Code Stakes on turf at Santa Anita May 19, one of two Bob Baffert runners had previously done his best running from the front. But he was outrun to the front by race favorite Tapalo (Tapiture) who rocketed out to a...

Despite Churchill Ban, Key Owners Keep Their Horses With Baffert

With Churchill Downs having ruled that any horse that remained in the Baffert barn as of Jan. 29 would be ineligible to run in the GI Kentucky Derby, Monday was decision day for Baffert's owners. In 2022 and 2023, several moved their horses into the barn of former Baffert assistant Tim Yakteen prior to the Derby, but that may not turn out to be the case this year. At least four owners who have Derby candidates with Baffert have said their horses will remain under the care of their Hall...

Another 'Wyn' for Baffert in Los Alamitos Futurity

Wynstock (Solomini), campaigned in partnership by Los Alamitos track owner Ed Allred and one-time Hollywood Park president and current Los Al vice president Jack Liebau, provided his New York-based stallion with his second stakes winner of the afternoon and first at the graded level when narrowly outlasting Stronghold (Ghostzapper) in Saturday's GII Los Alamitos Futurity. It was the eighth victory in the 10 runnings of the Futurity since relocating to Orange County for trainer Bob Baffert and first since 2020. Ironically, Solomini crossed the wire best in the 2017 renewal,...

'TDN Rising Star' Coach Prime High Steps Into Los Alamitos Futurity

Trainer Bob Baffert won seven consecutive editions of the GII Los Alamitos Futurity until that streak ended two years ago. The Hall of Famer will have half the field when Wynstock (Solomini), Coach Prime (Quality Road) and GSP Wine Me Up (Vino Rosso) line up for his barn on Saturday. Coach Prime was a $1.7 million Keeneland September yearling, and began to pay back owner Zedan last out with a 7 1/4-length win at Del Mar Nov. 10, earning him the status of 'TDN Rising Star'. As for his stablemates,...
