Steward Stan Bowker Passes After Serving Fifty Years In Industry

Stan Bowker, a longtime management executive who also served as a steward at several racetracks, passed away Sept. 10 in Clearwater, Florida after a long illness. After 17 1/2 years at Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha, Nebraska where he rose to become the director of racing, Bowker made stops at Canterbury Downs and Will Rogers Downs. He was also a senior steward at Colonial Downs and spent 11 years as a judge at Oaklawn Park, Indiana Grand, and as recently as 2021, at Canterbury Park. Florida THA Offers Support to the Oklahoma TRA After Tornado

The Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association pledged its support to the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma after a tornado struck Will Rogers Downs May 27--killing one horse, while injuring and displacing others. Approximately 150 horses were affected by the tornado, which caused widespread damage in northeast Oklahoma, damaged 14 barns on the backside and left the location without power and water. Will Rogers Downs was hit by a tornado that tore through Claremore, Oklahoma Saturday night. The tornado, which caused heavy damage to homes and businesses in the area, was an EF-2, according to initial surveys by the National Weather Service. The Enhanced Fujita Wind Scale rates tornados from zero to five, with five being the strongest.
