Matz to Judge 2020 MHBA Yearling Show

Two-time classic-winning trainer Michael Matz will judge the 86th annual Maryland Horse Breeders Association Yearling Show. Open to all yearlings eligible for Maryland-bred registration, the show has been rescheduled for 2020 and will be held Sunday, July 19 at the Maryland State Fairgounds' Horse Show Ring in Timonium. A short yearling by Union Rags topped Tuesday's consignor preferred session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's Winter Mixed Sale when selling for $165,000 to the Blue Sky Stables pinhooking partnership led by Brian Graves. The dark bay colt (hip 4) was consigned by Pelican State Thoroughbreds as agent for breeder David Fennelly's Mountmellick Farm. First Foal a Filly for Free Drop Billy

Grade I winner and Spendthrift stallion Free Drop Billy (Union Rags--Trensa, by Giant's Causeway) sired his first foal when stakes-placed Sweet Diva (Purim) produced a filly Jan. 19 at Heaven Trees Farm in Lexington, KY. "This is a good-sized filly with a lot of bone. She's going to be nice," said Adolfo Martinez, manager at Heaven Trees. The foal was bred by Bill O'Neill through Spendthrift's "Share the Upside" program.
