Steve Castagnola Rejoins Taylor Made

Steve Castagnola, who was a Taylor Made team member between 1997-2009, has rejoined Taylor Made as Sales Recruiter. Castagnola's main focus will be the development of relationships and the recruitment of new business, while assisting in both the public and private sales divisions of Taylor Made. "I came to Taylor Made in January 1997 as an intern, and over my 12 years, worked with Ben Taylor in helping manage the early books of Unbridled's Song and our then fledgling stallion operation before becoming the Director of Client Development," Castagnola said....

Taking Stock: Liam's Map Flying Unbridled's Song Flag

We've been waiting a long time for a high-class son of Unbridled's Song to make a statement at stud and stick around to carry his name forward in pedigrees, and that horse appears to be Lane's End's Liam's Map, who got his fourth Grade l winner over the weekend. Unbridled's Song was a terrific stallion and his daughters have made him one of the best broodmare sires around, but he's had difficulties finding sons at stud as good as his daughters. He's had some that showed glimmers of talent, and...

Tuesday Insights: Flatter Filly Looks To Create Some Debut 'Buzz'

Sponsored by Alex Nichols Agency 9th-IND, $34K, Msw, 3yo/up, f/m, 6f, post time: 6:33 p.m. ET STING LIKE ABBY (Flatter) debuts for trainer Ignacio Correas IV and cost Kingsport Farm $375,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September sale, making her the second most-expensive filly sold that year by her successful sire. Flatter's daughter Search Results--also bred at Machmer Hall--was a game runner-up in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks before going one better in the GI Acorn S. at Belmont Park last month. The March foal is the second produce out of...

Midshipman Charts New Course with Speedy Runners

He may not be flashiest sire on the Darley stud roster, but the quietly efficacious Midshipman (Unbridled's Song- Fleet Lady, by Avenue of Flags) might just be the most consistent. He ranks second amongst his studmates, behind Jonabell's elder statesman Medaglia d'Oro, in terms of blacktype runners to named foals at over a 12% clip, and his $7,500 stud fee this year only adds to his appeal. "I think the area where Midshipman really excels, and it's a very easy selling point, is that everyone has a mare that would...

A Stallion Putting Himself On the Map

You have to hand it to Liam's Map. Besides all his other merits, as a racehorse and now as a stallion, he has an unerring instinct for publicity. As a freshman, in 2019, the son of Unbridled's Song mustered only two stakes winners. Nothing wrong with that, from 46 starters. Champion American Pharoah had four, from 72. But when he struck the target at all, Liam's Map made sure he hit the bull's-eye. Both those stakes scores came in Grade I races, Basin taking the Hopeful and Wicked Whisper the...

Bird Song Sold to Saudi Arabia

Multiple graded stakes winner Bird Song (Unbridled's Song--Bird Town, by Cape Town) has been purchased to continue his stud career in Saudi Arabia in a deal brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock. The 7-year-old previously stood at Gainesway Farm, with his oldest crop being yearlings of this year. Trained by Ian Wilkes on behalf of Marylou Whitney, Bird Song won the GII Alysheba S. and GIII Fred W. Hooper S. as a 4-year-old in 2017 and finished his career with over $500,000 in earnings. His dam, who captured the...

Taylor Made's Stallion Program on the Rise

Since the loss of Taylor Made's signature stallion Unbridled's Song seven years ago, the farm has worked to regain its footing in the ever-evolving, ever-competitive business of stallion development. The first step, finding prospective stallions that fit a specific program, often proves to be the most difficult. "What do you look for in a stallion?" asked Taylor Made's Frank Taylor. "The one thing we know is nobody knows who is going to be a great stallion. If anybody tells you they do, they're not telling the truth." [tdn_vimeo_embed title="Taylor Made...

Arrogate Yearlings Keep the Torch Burning

Arrogate's first book of 143 mares, a who's who of some of the top breeding stock in the country, reflected the jaw-dropping career of North America's richest racehorse. Dual Eclipse Champion Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro) was one of several champions sent to Arrogate during his first year at stud. "Arrogate's first book was incredibly special," said Juddmonte's Stallions Nominations Manager Leif Aaron. "Half of the book was graded stakes winners or graded stakes producers, and a quarter of it was Grade I winners or Grade I producers. Breeders brought their very...

Taking Stock: Arrogate Death a Blow

The unexpected death of Arrogate (Unbridled's Song) on Tuesday was a devastating blow to his connections at Juddmonte and to the industry at large. He was the horse that Juddmonte had expected to base its boutique North American stallion operation around and he was the last great hope that his late sire would deliver a top-of-the-line stallion, something Unbridled's Song has been unable to do yet during an illustrious career as an excellent sire of racehorses, including 22 Grade l winners, and an outstanding sire of broodmares. Those expectations have...
