Longtime California Sire Tizbud Euthanized

Harris Farms resident stallion Tizbud (Cee's Tizzy--Cee's Song, by Seattle Song), the California-bred sire and full-brother to Hall of Famer Tiznow, was euthanized July 20 due to an overall decline in health. Tizbud was pensioned in 2018 at Harris Farms, where he was foaled, raised and stood at stud. Tizbud was bred by Cecilia Straub Rubens and raced for Cee's Stable LLC under the tutelage of trainer John Sadler. Owner Pamela C. Ziebarth stood Tizbud at Harris Farms, where he sired Grade I winner Tiz Flirtatious as well as popular...

Who's Your Favorite Horse? with Michael Callanan and Joe Bianca

MICHAEL CALLANAN, SIERRA FARM Favorite: Nessy My favorite horse was, and still is, our old boy Nessy (Flower Alley). In 2018, Ed Hudon wasn't doing very well, and it seemed every good horse we came up ended up coming up with an injury or being not quite good enough to win a graded stakes. Ed and his wife Sharon had never won a graded stakes up to this point and time was running out. Ian Wilkes had penciled in the GIII San Juan Capistrano which was Ed's favorite race at...

How 'Dennis' Jump Started Ballysax

Call it seizing the moment. Carl McEntee's very first Saratoga consignment, just a couple of weeks after hanging out a shiny new Ballysax board at the July Sale in Lexington. A consignment, admittedly, comprising of a single Tiznow colt. "Obviously everyone wants to take a yearling to Saratoga," McEntee says. "And it's very simple to say, 'Let's take this Tapit up there, or this War Front, this Pharoah.' Great, if you have those horses. At that stage, in a fledgling company that'd been going six months, I didn't have clientele...

Dennis' Moment Breezes for Fountain of Youth

Albaugh Family Stables LLC's 'TDN Rising Star' Dennis' Moment (Tiznow) breezed five furlongs in 1:00.22 (4/35) at Gulfstream Park Saturday in preparation for a planned 2020 debut in the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Feb. 29. The GIII Iroquois S. winner stumbled badly at the start and was a non-factor eighth as the 4-5 favorite in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Nov. 1. "Everything went well, exactly what we were looking for," trainer Dale Romans said. "He hasn't missed a beat. His progression has been great. He's...

A Retirement Fit For a Queen

When Michelle Crawford came across the 25-year-old blue hen Tizso (Cee's Tizzy), a full-sister to Hall of Famer Tiznow, in the Keeneland January catalogue, she immediately knew she had to have her. The longtime Standardbred owner/breeder, who operates Crawford Farms in Durhamville, N.Y. with her husband Al, wanted to ensure that the mare received the retirement she deserved. "I started going through the catalogue and she was number 90, so I didn't get very far before I said that is it, she is the one I'm getting," Crawford said from...

Follow the Brick Road to B.C. Classic

Race by race, Bricks and Mortar (Giant's Causeway) is building a formidable rampart against any rival that might yet emerge from the flux of summer to batter his (or her) way into Horse of the Year contention. But we all know how those green stains on his shoes will tend to weaken his cause, in that theater no less than when he retires to stud. In fact, with the yearling market still only paying lip service to the "growing importance" of turf racing in the U.S., Bricks and Mortar has...

Mr. Money Becomes a Millionaire at Mountaineer

Mr. Money has proven more or less unbeatable since a breakout romp in the GIII Pat Day Mile on GI Kentucky Derby Day May 4, and the progressive colt strung together his fourth consecutive win Saturday while becoming a millionaire. Breaking well from a high draw, the heavy favorite locked on to Plus Que Parfait early and traveled under stout restraint through opening splits of :24.42 and :49.10. He poked a head in front turning for home, and was clearly going much better than his rivals as he hit the...

Albaugh Family Hoping for More This Time

When Dennis' Moment (Tiznow) romped to a 19 1/4-length maiden victory at Ellis Park Saturday, the performance drew obvious comparisons to another Albaugh Family Stables runner who graduated impressively at the Henderson oval three years ago. Not This Time (Giant's Causeway) carried the operation's blue and white silks to a 10-length maiden score in August of 2016. He went on to add an 8 3/4-length win in the GIII Iroquois S. and came up just a neck short of champion Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile) when second in the GI...
