Mike Smith Joins TDN Writers' Room Podcast

When it comes to winning Breeders' Cup races, no rider does it better than Mike (Big Money) Smith. His 27 wins leads all jockeys and is seven wins better than runner-up John Velazquez. With the Breeders' Cup quickly approaching, Smith sat down with the team at the TDN Writers' Room Podcast presented by Keeneland and took us on a trip down memory lane. Smith was this week's Guest of the Week. Of the 27 wins, is one his favorite? "It would have to be Zenyatta (in the 2009 Classic)," he...

Subsanador to Miss Breeders' Cup

Wathnan Racing's Subsanador (Arg) (Fortify) will be forced to miss the GI Breeders' Cup Classic after sustaining an ankle injury, according to a report in Daily Racing Form. "We found a problem in his ankle and we'll have to turn him out," trainer Ricahrd Mandella told DRF's Steve Andersen. "It's not a big problem. "We'll have to stop and come back next year." Purchased privately by Wathnan Racing earlier this year, the 5-year-old won the GIII Philip H. Iselin Stakes in August before earning an automatic berth in the Classic...

Breeders' Cup Connections: Taylor Cambra and Subsanador, Born for This

His voice was hoarse from yelling and his hand was a little sore after an overly exuberant high five, but Taylor Cambra was grinning from ear to ear as he weaved through the crowd at Santa Anita and made his way down to the winner's circle. The assistant trainer to Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella was one of the first out on the track to greet Mike Smith and Subsanador (Arg) (Fortify) after their hair-raising victory in the GI California Crown Stakes. It was the inaugural running of the...

Breeding Digest: The Enduring Merit Uniting Mufasa And His Trainer

Class: an elusive concept, in horses as in people. That's because it refers to something inherent, something beyond external trappings. In this business, most of us will have observed how someone can be wealthy and still have no class; and also, more pleasingly, how material poverty need not diminish those human qualities that elevate a person from the mean (in every sense of that word). To whatever extent it may be heritable, then, one core indicator of class is perhaps durability itself. For that is the very opposite of the...

Subsanador Outbattles Baffert Duo in Heart-Stopping Inaugural California Crown

Go ahead and crown him. Wathnan Racing's Subsanador (Arg) (Fortify) sat the trip of the race and came out on top by a head in a blanket, three-horse finish in the inaugural $1-million GI California Crown Stakes at Santa Anita. The Bob Baffert-trained duo of National Treasure (Quality Road) and 'TDN Rising Star' Newgate (Into Mischief) were second and third, respectively. 'TDN Rising Star' Muth (Good Magic), a perfect three for three for Baffert this season, led by a win in the GI Arkansas Derby, was last of six as...

Newgate claims the Big Cap for Dettori, Baffert

The stormy forecast that delayed the Big 'Cap card originally scheduled for Saturday at Santa Anita and the scratching of his sophomore sensation Nysos (Nyquist) did little to dampen Bob Baffert's day as Newgate (Into Mischief)'s last-jump victory in the GI Santa Anita H. gave the trainer three graded wins--plus, the exacta in the GII San Felipe S.--in Arcadia Sunday. The stallion-making partnership of SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Robert Masterson, Stonestreet Stables, et al, co-owners of Newgate, doubled up on graded scores with Imagination (Into Mischief)'s win in...
