The $140,000 Keeneland September yearling is half to MGSP Tap for Luck (Tapit) and to the dam of GSW/GISP Jeltrin (Tapizar). Peace Peddler (Gun Runner) set a solid pace in...

Kentucky Sires for 2021: First Sophomores–Part II
Kentucky Sires for 2021: First Sophomores–Part II

This is the second half of the latest instalment in our ongoing survey of covering options for the new breeding season. The first part can be read here. UPSTART (Flatter--Party Silks, by Touch Gold) was cleverly named and I think him a very plausible type, likely to rise pretty quickly through the ranks. Certainly there were more than enough "nouveaux riches" among his first juveniles--only Not This Time exceeded his 19 winners (from 54 starters)--for him to be pegged at $10,000 by Airdrie. His principal earner was Reinvestment Risk, who...

Speightster Filly Sharp in Return to Tapeta

Dreaming of Drew dominated in her return to the Tapeta and stamped herself as one to watch for next year's Woodbine Oaks and maybe even Queen's Plate while becoming her freshman sire (by Speightstown)'s second stakes winner. The chestnut earned a solid 81 Beyer Speed Figure for a second-out romp going short over this same strip July 18, but was out-nosed in the grassy Catch a Glimpse S. Aug. 23 and settled for fourth when stretched to a mile for the GI Natalma S. Sept. 20. Donning blinkers for the...

Speightster Filly Fastest at OBS Under-Tack Show

A filly by Speightster turned in the fastest furlong work of Sunday's under-tack show ahead of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's October Sale. The juvenile (hip 50), consigned by Julie Davies, covered the distance in :10 1/5. She is out of Bern Legacy (Bernstein), a half-sister to graded placed Centrique (Malibu Moon). A $55,000 Keeneland November purchase, the bay filly RNA'd for $70,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale. Three 2-year-olds shared the day's fastest quarter-mile work: a filly by Candy Ride (Arg) (hip 2, :21 1/5) consigned by Top...

Juvenile Market Crash Not the Full Picture

Last year, an ongoing bull run in the North American bloodstock market carried the juvenile sector to a historic breakthrough. For the first time, aggregate turnover broke the $200 million barrier. The momentum felt so giddy that the next milestone, with the mean cost of a 2-year-old standing at $95,807, promised to be a six-figure average. No market, of course, can sustain perennial growth. Capitalism requires recession to regenerate value. While these cycles will ideally be mild, this particular market is always especially exposed to any incipient weakness. Very often,...

Fabricate Becomes Second Winner for Speightster

FABRICATE (f, 2, Speightster--Counterfactual, by Scat Daddy) entered this debut off a best-of-20 half-mile in :48 2/5 in the mud here June 22 and was bet down to 5-2 from a 5-1 morning-line quote. Keeping tabs from third through a :21.89 first quarter, the dark bay split rivals as the half went in :45.16 and forged clear in mid-stretch. Stablemate Bahama Mischief (Into Mischief) tried to make a race of it in the end, but was too late, finishing a half-length back in second. Fabricate is the second winner for...

Speedy First Two-Year-Olds for WinStar's Speightster

WinStar's Speightstown continues to prove himself as an accomplished sire of sires. Already, he's had four sons go on to produce Grade I winners and just in the last two years, he's seen eight additional sons, including GISW Force the Pass and the multiple graded stakes-winning Qurbaan, begin their stud careers. In 2017, WinStar welcomed their graded stakes-winning homebred Speightster into the same stud barn as his prodigious sire. With an initial stud fee set at $10,000, a price that has stayed in place since, Speightster has been supported with...

Speightster Colt Lights it Up Late at OBS

A New York-bred colt from the first crop of Speightster lit up the board late Friday at OBS as he garnered a $1.1-million final bid from Christina Jelm, who was acting on behalf of Larry Best's OXO Equine LLC. Consigned by Tom McCrocklin as hip 1312, the :20 4/5 breezer turned in a strong gallop out that caught plenty of eyes. A supplemental entry to the OBS Spring sale, the son of MSP Auspicious (Indian Charlie)--already named Fortunate Son--was a $110,000 Saratoga York-bred yearling purchase by McCrocklin.
