'He Was A Real Man Here Today'–SF, Partners Go For More Good Magic at Keeneland September

On day three of the 2021 Keeneland September Sale, bloodstock agent Donato Lanni went to $775,000 for a colt from the first crop of champion Good Magic on behalf of the partnership headed up by SF Bloodstock, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables. Reincarnate has helped put his young Hill 'n' Dale-based sire on the map with a victory in this year's GIII Sham S. and Los Alamitos Derby, and the team will be hoping that lightning strikes twice after they parted with $700,000 for the Gainesway-consigned hip 2009 during the...

'It is Incumbent on Our Racetracks to Provide Leadership in the Face of the Current Crisis.' Letter to the Editor: Gavin Murphy

I wanted to add my voice to the growing chorus, led most recently by Amanda Luby and Lucas Marquardt, bringing attention to the existential crisis we face unless we make immediate and critical reforms to the way horse racing is conducted in this country. In the absence of any national body able or prepared to mandate change, it is incumbent on the racetracks themselves to undertake the requisite reforms. Those reforms need to address the interconnectedness between racetrack surfaces and the equine musculoskeletal system. Our access to technology and data...

An 'Authentic' Purchase For SF/Starlight/Madaket

A colt from the first crop of Horse of the Year Authentic was hammered down to Donato Lanni, agent for SF Bloodstock, Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables for $875,000 as the first night of trade at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga reached its midpoint. Taking Stock: Donato Lanni's (Almost) Perfect Weekend

I called the elite bloodstock agent Donato Lanni last Wednesday only to tell him I'd call him again Sunday and to expect my call. I was fortunate he picked up, because he was on a golf course enjoying a rare day off following a busy Keeneland September sale where he'd purchased a number of million-dollar yearlings among many others. When we made plans to speak again, neither of us mentioned why I'd be calling. I didn't want to jinx him, with Cave Rock (Arrogate), War Like Goddess (English Channel), and...
