Additional Five Quarter Horses Euthanized at Los Alamitos Due to EIA

Following news less than two weeks ago that seven Quarter Horses testing positive for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) at Los Alamitos were euthanized, the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) issued a grim update Wednesday evening. The infectious disease necessitated the euthanization of an additional five horses Oct. 16. Like the original seven, all five were Quarter Horses trained by Heath Taylor. A Quarter Horse stabled at Los Alamitos, which will hold its next Thoroughbred meet in December, was discovered to be suffering from Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) in late September and has been euthanized. Horse Tests Positive For EHV at Laurel

The Maryland Jockey Club was alerted to a horse displaying neurological abnormalities in its hind limbs Apr. 14, and the horse in question subsequently tested positive for Equine Herpesvirus (EHV), according to a Maryland Jockey Club release. As a precautionary measure, both the affected horse and another, which had been in close proximity to the affected animal but showed no symptoms, were relocated to an isolation barn at Laurel Park. Quarantine Extended in Belmont's Barn 15 Until Feb. 26

The period of the quarantine of Barn 15 at Belmont has been extended by two days by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) and the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) due to another horse in that barn, Willful Desire, developing a fever. Gulfstream Park confirmed Sunday a case of EHV on grounds in Barn 21. "On Jan. 21, Gulfstream Park identified a horse who was displaying signs of EHV," the track said in a statement. Five additional horses stabled at Churchill Downs have tested positive for Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) after an initial case Tuesday of a horse showing symptoms consistent with the contagious disease.
