Tanquerray Another Timely Acquisition for Nicks

Indiana horseman William Austin Nicks, who improbably acquired the dam of Rich Strike just days before that colt won the GI Kentucky Derby in May, scored another dam of a future Grade I winner on a shoestring budget when he purchased Tanquerray (Good Journey), in foal to Outwork, for $2,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton February sale. The mare was followed into the sales ring at that auction by her yearling filly by Outwork, who sold for $8,000. Reoffered at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic in October, the yearling brought $40,000. Now named Leave...

Outwork Filly Duels and Draws Off in Fasig-Tipton Debutante

At the Spa dueled early and kept finding late to take the Fasig-Tipton Debutante S. at Santa Anita Sunday and cap a big weekend for breeder and co-owner Terry Lovingier. The Cal-bred aired by seven lengths in Arcadia in open company May 7 and was further flattered when runner-up Munny Penny (Munnings)--also bred and co-owned by Lovinger--returned to romp herself. At the Spa was given a 9-5 second choice chance behind only Florida invader Laurel Canyon and she dueled with that foe from the outset through splits of :22.17 and...

Kentucky Sires for 2021: First Sophomores–Part I

The stallions we reach today are the first actually to have given some initial clue as to their ability to replicate those assets that earned them a place at stud. True, only their most precocious stock have so far tested the water and it should be obvious that limited conclusions can be drawn from so small a sample of their work. But we know the apathy of commercial breeders about producing racehorses. So long as they maximize their value as yearlings, the rest is gravy. That's why they get behind...

Body & Soul: Don't Look Now… Well, Maybe We'd Better

This business about sire lines has been driving your correspondent a bit nuts for the past 40 years, dating from when he first came to understand the realm, initially through the discourses of the great analyst Dr. Franco Varola and the estimable author Abe Hewitt. In those days we all not only relied on the historical database of a rather limited number of stallions but also on the patience needed to assess the long-term impact of form, function, and pedigree. You had Phalaris and Swynford, then Nearco and Hyperion, then...
