B.E.S.T. Seeking Additional Donations to Support Backstretch Workers

The Backstretch Employee Service Team of New York, which operates the B.E.S.T. Health Center located on the Belmont Park backstretch, is seeking additional donations in support of its efforts to assist the local racing community during the coronavirus pandemic. Belmont Groom Dies from COVID-19

Martin Zapata, who spent the last two years working as a groom for trainer Tom Morley, died Tuesday due to complications from COVID-19, according to NYTHA. The 63-year-old Panama native tested positive Mar. 24 and was hospitalized Mar. 26. Six People On Belmont Backstretch Have Tested Positive for COVID-19

The number of individuals who work on the Belmont backstretch and have tested positive for coronavirus has risen to six. On Mar. 19, NYRA confirmed that a backstretch employee had tested positive and, according to NYRA Communications Director Patrick McKenna, five more racetrack workers at Belmont have tested positive since that time. After the first case of the virus was found, NYRA announced that live racing at Aqueduct had been postponed indefinitely. New York Race Track Chaplaincy of America Hosting Fundraiser

The New York Race Track Chaplaincy of America has launched a fundraiser in support of backstretch workers to help during the challenging circumstances relative to the coronavirus (COVID-19). The chaplaincy is looking to bolster its food pantry and welcomes any financial contribution. For those who wish to donate food, non-perishable items that are microwaveable are welcome. Empire Racing Club Launches Season 2

The Empire Racing Club (ERC), an initiative by the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association introducing fans to racehorse ownership, announced the launch of the 2020 season, which officially kicks off Apr. 1. Alempijevic Named NYTHA Executive Director

Will Alempijevic (pronounced Al-em-pee-ya-vich) will join the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association effective Feb. 12, 2020, as the new Executive Director, NYTHA announced Tuesday. Alempijevic replaces Andy Belfiore, who served in the role for four years before leaving to take the post as the national THA's Project Manager for the Mid-Atlantic Strategic Plan to Reduce Equine Fatalities last October.
