Frassetto Bidding For More Glory With Adlerflug Colt

DEAUVILLE, France--He could certainly be considered one who got away. The prowess of Adlerflug (Ger) was only really fully appreciated in the last few years of his life, which was sadly all too short. The son of In The Wings (GB) was of course responsible for last year's Arc winner Torquator Tasso (Ger) but that major triumph came six months after his death at Gestut Schlenderhan at the age of just 17. With two yearlings catalogued this week at Arqana, the only one of those in Part II of the...

Happily for him, Be A Nice...

Derby Winner Aiming For New World Record

An awful lot has changed in the world of Italian breeding since Nearco (Ity) was bred in 1935 by the legendary Federico Tesio. The Pharos (GB) colt's faultless 14-race career, which included victories in the Derby Italiano and Grand Prix de Paris, led to his sale, on the cusp of World War II, to stand in England at Beech House Stud, where a bomb shelter was constructed to ensure his safety.  It proved to be a precaution worth taking. As the sire of Nearctic and grandsire of Northern Dancer, Nearco's...

Castillon's Glory The Result Of Years Of Hard Work

DEAUVILLE, France--When Arqana issued the news, on Oct. 11, that Grand Glory (GB) (Olympic Glory {Ire})—the Group 1 winner raced by a partnership of Albert Frassetto, John d'Amato, and Mike Pietrangelo—would be offered at their upcoming December Breeding Stock sale, there was something curious about the story. Reading the alert from the TDN, Benoit Jeffroy and the team at Haras de Castillon immediately picked up on it: the story did not list a consignor. "Amelie [Lemercier] sent me a text, and she said, 'Did you see? She's going to Arqana,'"...

Italy Beckons For Arqana Top Lot Agnes

Following last year's dispersal of the stock of the Marquesa de Moratalla, which brought record trade for this time of the year in Deauville, Arqana's February Sale returned to steadier levels on Tuesday. At €1,380,700, the aggregate was back around the 2018 mark, the 64% decline on last year's turnover showing just how big a difference a dispersal can make to a minor sale and how year-on-year comparisons can prove futile. The average of €11,568 and median €5,000 were both ahead of the corresponding figures from two years ago, but...
