Rosario Roll Continues With Kimari in the Madison

The temperatures were on the cool side Saturday in Central Kentucky, but jockey Joel Rosario was hot. As in en fuego. The Dominican sensation had ridden, in succession, Flagstaff (Speightstown) to victory in the GIII Commonwealth S.; Bound For Nowhere (The Factor)--who was drawn somewhere in the middle of Versailles Road--to win the GII Shakertown S.; and produced 'TDN Rising Star' Malathaat (Curlin) at just the right time to snatch the GI Central Bank Ashland S. Rosario completed a spectacular stakes four-timer in the day's penultimate race, riding Ten Broeck...

Bell's the One Headlines Madison

Bell's the One (Majesticperfection) tops a competitive field of seven in Keeneland's GI Madison S. Saturday. Winning her first graded event at this oval in the 2019 GII Raven Run S., the bay captured the GIII Winning Colors S. at Churchill last May and checked in third behind Guarana (Ghostzapper) in last year's renewal of this event, which was held in July due to the pandemic. She rallied to a nose defeat of GI Kentucky Oaks victress Serengeti Empress (Alternation) in Churchill's GI Derby City Distaff S., also delayed from...

'Rising Stars' Square off Again in Prioress Showdown

After a second straight year of rounding out the exacta at the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting, 'TDN Rising Star' Kimari (Munnings) returns from across the pond as the 2-1 morning-line choice in Saturday's GII Prioress S. at Saratoga. The 2019 G2 Queen Mary S. runner-up and 2020 G1 Commonwealth Cup second-place finisher has won her two prior attempts on dirt-airing on debut at Keeneland last spring and defeating the re-opposing 'TDN Rising Star' Frank's Rockette (Into Mischief) in a sloppy renewal of Oaklawn's Purple Martin S. Apr. 4. Kimari has...

Turf Puts Focus on Best of Both Worlds

Is the grass really greener on the other side of the fence? That's certainly a plausible inference, looking at the latest Grade I event staged on American turf. Of the seven fillies and mares contesting the Just A Game S. at Belmont on Saturday, four were bred in Europe; and three of those also started their track careers there. Moreover the solitary American winner at Royal Ascot was actually bred and raised in Ireland, and exported only last fall from Tattersalls. It stands to reason, of course, if European blood...

Ward Outlines Future Plans for Ascot Runners

Wesley Ward runner Campanelle (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), who won the G2 Queen Mary S. on Saturday, is being targeted at the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville in France later this summer. Ward was not on hand at Royal Ascot due to the ongoing coronavirus, but instead watched from his base at Keeneland. He said, "The Prix Morny is where we're headed [with Campanelle]. She'll come home now and have a couple of gallops on the beautiful grass here in Keeneland, and hopefully then she'll be ready to ship to Deauville....

Royal Ascot Return Likely for Kimari

Ten Broeck Farm's Kimari (Munnings) may be in line for a return date at the Royal Ascot meeting this summer following her win in the Purple Martin S. at Oaklawn Saturday. Trainer Wesley Ward said the tentative plan for Kimari, who was second in last year's G2 Queen Mary S., is to return to England for the June 19 G1 Commonwealth Cup. "She's going to be just a pure sprinter, dirt or turf," Ward said after his first career Oaklawn victory Saturday. "We'll probably try to stick a little bit...

Munnings' Kimari Captures Purple Martin

Kimari returned to winning ways and scored her first black-type victory on dirt in the Purple Martin S. The bay settled in mid-pack off a sharp first quarter in :21.63. Tipped out two wide for running room, she improved her position through a half in :45.26 and unleashed a powerful rally in the stretch, charging clear to score. "I was really, really super confident going into this race," trainer Wesley Ward said. "I'm kind of a positive guy, anyways, but after seeing those two works, I knew it would take...

Abscond Hopes for Easier Getaway in Herecomesthebride

Grade I winner Abscond (Blame), favored in the local Ginger Brew S. last out, stumbled at the start and got rank after that before finishing a close third, but will have a chance at redemption when likely going off as the public's choice again in Saturday's GIII Herecomesthebride S. for 3-year-old turf fillies at Gulfstream. A debut victress sprinting on the Ellis green last July, the bay was runner-up to 'TDN Rising Star' Kimari (Munnings) in the Bolton Landing S. Aug. 14 at Saratoga before gamely prevailing in the GI...
