Keeneland

Letter to the Editor: Jack Wolf

After reading Dan Ross's Aftercare gaps article in the May 31 edition of the TDN, I have some suggestions. Jeff Bloom (TAA president) hit the problem on the head: "One way or another we need a mandatory sustainable fundraising solution. So who's going to pay for that?" As TAA's Founder and first President in 2012, I was a complete failure in attaining mandatory funding through our Industry. It continues to baffle me on how we could not raise $15-$20 million to help solve this problem. Maybe that's not enough either,...

No Sanctions For Moquett In Medication Positive

Trainer Ron Moquett, who is a dual member of the HBPA board and the HISA Horseman's Advisory Committee, was not charged with any fines nor penalties May 29 by HISA's ADMC program after MGSP Speed Bias (Uncle Mo) was found last fall to have Mepivacaine--a controlled medication--in his system, according to a tweet sent out by the Arkansas-based conditioner on Thursday afternoon. The post-race test was administered after the gelding finished third in the GII Hagyard Fayette S. at Keeneland Oct. 28. Moquett was informed of the split sample result...

Breeders' Spotlight: The Stories of Hidden Brook

The first thing you notice as you pull up to Hidden Brook Farm's yearling division is how, on either side of the doors leading into the indoor walker, dozens and dozens of nameplates are lined in neat rows, serving as the honor roll of horses bred, foaled, raised or sold by Hidden Brook. Ask farm manager Sergio de Sousa about any one of the names you see listed there and he will have a story. Take, for instance, Tell a Kelly. The daughter of Tapit was consigned by Hidden Brook...

Bolt d'Oro Filly Brings $1.25M at Fasig Midlantic May Sale

A filly by Bolt d'Oro (hip 401) brought a final bid of $1.25 million from trainer Steve Asmussen, acting on behalf of Ron Winchell, midway through the second session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic May 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale Tuesday in Timonium. Consigned by Wavertree Stables, the filly worked a furlong during last week's under-tack preview in :10 flat. Ciaran Dunne purchased the filly on behalf of a pinhooking partnership for $335,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale. She is out of Werewolf (Arch) and is a half-sister to graded-placed Howling...

Breeding Digest: Justify Straddling The Seas

Having long served as Champion Bore regarding the schism between gene pools either side of the Atlantic, I always find it curious that Europeans so readily shed their inhibitions about American stallions once a 2-year-old is introduced to their domestic market by a compatriot pinhooker. That's presumably because they are nowadays so enslaved by the clock--whatever their contrary claims--that pedigree has almost been neutralized at 2-year-old sales. Functionality is all. Admittedly an elite sire will put a premium on a bullet time. But just as unfashionable local stallions have achieved...

Kenny McPeek Joins the TDN Writers' Room Podcast

For trainer Kenny McPeek it was an unforgettable weekend. He struck first with Thorpedo Anna (Fast Anna) in the GI Kentucky Oaks and came back the next day to win the GI Kentucky Derby with Mystik Dan (Goldencents). McPeek became the first trainer since Plain Ben Jones in 1952 to win both the Oaks and Derby the same year. How did he pull it off? What's next for Mystik Dan? Why was he so confident before each race? Those were among the questions our panel asked McPeek when he appeared...
