Four-time Grade I winner McKinzie (Street Sense--Runway Model, by Petionville) has been retired from racing and will stand stud at Gainesway in 2021, the farm announced Wednesday evening. "McKinzie was absolutely brilliant. He was an undefeated Grade I winner at two, as well as a multiple Grade I winner and top-rated horse at three and four years of age," Brian Graves, General Manager of Gainesway, said. "His speed, precocity and good looks make him an absolute standout." Purchased by Karl Watson, Michael Pegram and Paul Weitman for $170,000 at Keeneland...

Breeders Facing Many Uncertainties as COVID-19 Pandemic Continues

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a lot of discussion and reporting on how quarantine, shutdowns, safety protocols and the shift in the sales calendar has affected trainers, backstretch workers, owners and sales companies. However, very little has been said about how it affects the breeders, who are the backbone of the Thoroughbred industry. Only one 2-year-old sale, the OBS March Sale, has been held so far this year with many of the other juvenile sales being postponed or even canceled. Fasig-Tipton has combined their July, Saratoga and New...

Littleprincessemma Foals Half-Sister to American Pharoah

Littleprincessemma (Yankee Gentleman), dam of Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile), produced a Tapit filly around 10 p.m. on Easter at Jane Lyon's Summer Wind Farm in Georgetown, Kentucky. Weighing in at over 130 pounds, the filly was born chestnut with three white socks and a unique semi-circle on her forehead. However, the silver around her eyes and muzzle and flecked through her coat indicate she will turn gray like her famed sire. "She was a very large foal and probably the longest legged foal Emma has ever...

"It was an outstanding opening session of the 2019 Saratoga sale," said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr. "I thought we saw very competitive bidding throughout the evening. There was a lot of strength and a lot of diversity in...

'Princess' Becomes a Queen

The $2.1 million Jane Lyon spent to purchase Littleprincessemma (Yankee Gentleman), who was in foal to young sire Pioneerof the Nile, at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November sale may have seemed a little steep at the time. However, it proved to be a steal at 6:53 p.m. June 6 when her son American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) captured the GI Belmont S. and in turn became the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years. "Pioneerof the Nile was still a young stallion, although he had obviously already produced a Grade I...
