For most of the sport's history the mental well-being of jockeys was not something that anybody talked about or even thought about. But the problem could no longer be ignored when, in 2023, two jockeys, Alex Canchari and Avery Whisman, took their own lives. They were otherwise young and healthy, but the pressures of being a jockey was a burden both, apparently, could not handle. They were not alone. HISA Launches Veterinary Advisory Committee

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) has established a Veterinary Advisory Committee that will be made up of regulatory and private practice racetrack veterinarians from around the nation. The committee will provide feedback to HISA's executive team and standing committees on the implementation and evolution of HISA's regulations and protocols related to veterinary care, medication, racetrack safety, equine research and other relevant issues. RMTC Releases Updated Withdrawal Guidance Advisory of HISA's ADMC Detection Times

The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium's (RMTC) Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) has developed a withdrawal guidance for two additional substances, Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) and Pentosan (Zycosan) following an analysis of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority's (HISA) Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) screening limits and detection times. The Week in Review: Parx Didn't Close Down its Turf Course and a Horse Paid the Price

After a horse named Causes Trouble (Creative Cause) broke down in the Aug. 24 Parx Dash at Parx Race Course and had to be euthanized, a video circulated that showed that the turf course was in abysmal condition. Eighth Circuit Upholds Lower Court's Order Denying Horsemen's Request for HISA Injunction

The United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit on Friday affirmed a ruling out of a lower federal court in Arkansas that had denied a preliminary injunction sought by horsemen in Arkansas and Iowa to halt the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) and its Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) program. HIWU Lifts Jorge Duarte Suspension

The Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit has lifted the suspension assessed to trainer Jorge Duarte Jr. in the wake of one of his horses testing positive for methamphetamine after a race at Delaware Park in May. Duarte is the private trainer for Richard Santulli's Colts Neck Stables.
