Crestwood Heeding Breed's Needs in Stormy Times

When this whole thing is over, some kind of reset seems inevitable: certain priorities renewed, others revised. And perhaps, with an abrupt end looming to the relentless bull run in the bloodstock market, commercial breeders might begin to dig slightly deeper foundations for their broodmares. In recent times, they have been increasingly prepared to risk a mare's long-term viability by choosing her mates according to short-term market fads. Once that market plunges, however, it's all downside. The far-sighted breeder, as such, will surely seek to ride out the storm by...

River Boyne Over Got Stormy by a Head in Kilroe Mile

River Boyne continued to rack up wins over the Santa Anita turf course, scoring for the eighth time in Arcadia after sneaking inside of favorite Got Stormy late. Hugging the fence from fourth under a snug hold, River Boyne inched slightly closer and into the pocked after a :46.49 half prompted by Got Stormy. Forced to wait for clear sailing as pacesetter Kingly (Tapit) faded in front of him, he worked his way off the rail to avoid that foe before diving back inside to snatch victory from the public's...

Got Stormy Back Against the Boys in Kilroe

Five-year-old filly Got Stormy (Get Stormy), who turned in one of the best turf performances of 2019 when she bested the boys in Saratoga's GI Fourstardave H. in August, returns to open company for Saturday's GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile S. at Santa Anita. Subsequently second in the GI Woodbine Mile Sept. 14, she again completed the exacta as the favorite behind eventual champion turf female Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) in the course-and-distance GI Breeders' Cup Mile Nov. 2. She annexed the GI Matriarch S. at Del Mar Dec....

Got Stormy Finds Safe Launchpad in Endeavour

Eclipse finalist Got Stormy (Get Stormy), a multiple Grade I winner in 2019 who blossomed from a nice minor stakes horse into a bonafide star turf filly, will look to follow in the footsteps of Mark Casse champions Tepin (Bernstein) and World Approval (Northern Afleet) when getting her 5-year-old campaign underway as a prohibitive favorite at Tampa Bay Downs in Saturday's GIII Endeavour S. A winner of two listed stakes and a Grade III in the summer of 2018, the chestnut was stepped up to Grade I company for the...

'Bricks', Mitole and 'Max' To Battle Out Horse of the Year

The finalists for the 12 equine and five human divisions for the 49th annual Eclipse Awards were released Saturday morning, with GI Breeders' Cup Turf hero Bricks and Mortar (Giant's Causeway), GI Breeders' Cup Sprint victor Mitole (Eskendereya) and, in a bit of an upset, Maximum Security (New Year's Day) set to fight out the night's top honor as 2019 Horse of the Year. Heavily favored to take home the hardware for champion turf male, Bricks and Mortar was stellar in putting together a perfect six-for-six season in 2019. The...

The Week in Review: At Saratoga, So Much for Conventional Wisdom

Two trainers seemed to have lost their minds Saturday at Saratoga. The result? Two graded stakes wins. In an era in racing where trainers can't space the races for their horses far enough apart, Mark Casse was setting himself up to look foolish when he dropped Got Stormy (Get Stormy) into the entry box for the GI Fourstardave H. It wasn't just that he was running a filly against boys, he was running her back off one week's rest. Seven days earlier, she had romped in the Fasig-Tipton De La...

Brown Trio Tops Fourstardave

Trainer Chad Brown brings a three-pronged attack in the latest renewal of the GI Fourstardave H., headed by a pair of Grade I winners--Uni (More Than Ready), winner of the GI Matriarch at Del Mar last December and GI Hollywood Derby victor Raging Bull (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) on the same weekend. Since those victories, Uni has added another victory to her resume in Belmont's June 29 Perfect Sting S., while Raging Bull finished fourth in both Keeneland's Apr. 12 GI Maker's 46 Mile S. and the nine-furlong GI Turf...
