Goldencents Leads the Way By 2021 Mares Bred

His ascension to the top spot came after Spendthrift cut his stud fee from $25,000 to $15,000 and after a strong showing by his progeny in 2020. Goldencents was the leading third-crop sire in 2020 with $6,653,183 in earnings. His top performer during the year was By...

Going to Vegas Likely to Supplement to Breeders' Cup

Though not nominated to the Breeders' Cup, it appears that GI Rodeo Drive S. winner Going to Vegas (Goldencents) will put her three-race winning streak on the line in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. "The owners haven't collectively come together, but all indications are that she's going to the Breeders' Cup," said Myracehorse Founder and CEO Michael Behrens. "That was our expectation going into the Rodeo Drive, that if she ran well, the plan would be to go to the Breeders' Cup." It will cost $100,000 to...

Competitive Filly Sprinters Kick Off Spa Juvenile Action

5th-SAR, $100k, Msw, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f, 3:21 p.m. ET Split divisions of juvenile filly sprinters get the Saratoga baby race season underway on opening day Thursday, with this latter half appearing to be clearly the saltier spot on paper. Heads turned when a filly by thus-far unheralded freshman sire Valiant Minister hammered for $360,000--120 times the Bridlewood Farm resident's stud fee--at OBS April, but one viewing of OUTFOXED's breeze-show effort quickly explains why. The dark bay barreled through a powerful :20 4/5 quarter-mile work, sparking a bidding war that...

Kentucky Sires for 2021: Fourth-Crop Stallions

What a tough game this is. You only get to show the first card in your hand before virtually the whole pile of chips is distributed. One or two players gather up their winnings, whooping triumphantly, and suddenly your own hopes of staying in the game--your hopes of a viable stud career in Kentucky--depend exorbitantly on the next card. Generally speaking, it doesn't matter if you turn out to have had a whole sheaf of aces farther into your hand. By the time you can turn those over, there will...

What's In a Name: Incitato

Mad Roman Emperor Caligula tried to make his favorite horse INCITATUS a consul, according to legend--and the accounts of maybe partisan historians Suetonius and Cassius Dio. Clearly aware of this spectacular milestone of executive overreach, Dante Zanelli's wife Yolanda Del Rosario gave the Italian version of the name--INCITATO--to the colt by GOLDENCENTS out ZABEEL SARAY (by GIROLAMO) her husband bought at Fasig Tipton as a yearling last October. INCITATO, whose literal translation would be "incited" or "spurred", won his maiden spectacularly in Peru in October and now goes for a...

Mischief Currency Converting to Golden Standards

All that glisters is not gold. Certainly we shouldn't get too carried away: Goldencents has been launched by mares in such volume that there would be something badly amiss if he didn't come up with the occasional smart racehorse. In fact, a suitably brisk start made by his first juveniles in 2018 saw him entertain a staggering 239 mares last spring. That put him in the company of seven other stallions in the 200 club (five at Ashford, the other two alongside Goldencents at Spendthrift) and onto an aggregate 929...
