California Mainstay Eddie Truman Passes Aged 77

Eddie Truman, a trainer as renowned for his patience with the Thoroughbred as for a perennially genial disposition, has passed at the age of 77. "A great horseman and an even greater individual," said veteran trainer Gary Stute. "I never heard him say a bad word about anybody--anybody--and on the racetrack, that's few and far," Stute added. Weekly Rulings: May 1-7

Every week, the TDN posts a roundup of the relevant Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) related rulings from around the country. Among this week's rulings, trainer Pavel Matejka has four separate pending cases issued against him for cannabidiol (CBD) positives. The four cases occurred between Feb. 17 and March 15. Under HISA, CBD is classified a Class B controlled substance, a first offense for which comes with a possible 15-day suspension and $1,000 fine. Mel Stute Dies at 93

Longtime California trainer Melvin Stute passed away Wednesday in Del Mar, CA. He had just turned 93. Born in Indiana before moving westward with his family as a child, Stute was the brother of fellow California fixture Warren Stute--who died in 2007--and the father of active trainer Gary Stute.
