The GII Rachel Alexandra S., the first prep on the year for the GI Kentucky Oaks in which 50 points are awarded to the winner, topped last weekend's action and produced a surprising result. Turnerlooose (Nyquist), a 17-1 shot conditioned by Brad Cox, and the Todd Pletcher-trained Goddess of Fire (Mineshaft), who was 15-1, finished one two. A Cox-Pletcher exacta somehow paid $437.40. A total of 103 fillies were nominated to the May 6 GI Longines Kentucky Oaks when the early nomination period ended last Saturday. Echo Zulu Takes Champion 2YO Filly Honors As Expected

Unbeaten 'TDN Rising Star' Echo Zulu (Gun Runner) dominated in a trio of Grade I events last year for L and N Racing and Winchell Thoroughbreds and trainer Steve Asmussen: the GI Spinaway S., GI Frizette S. and GI NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, and was an unsurprising winner of the 2021 champion 2-year-old filly Eclipse Award Thursday. 312 Early Triple Crown Nominations

A total of 312 sophomores were nominated for this year's Triple Crown series at the early nomination deadline of Jan. 29. The number of early nominations slipped 4.3%, or 14 horses, from last year's total of 326. The nominated group is led by Grade I winners Corniche (Quality Road), Jack Christopher (Munnings), Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) and Rattle N Roll (Connect).
