Candy Ride's Candied Stays Perfect in Darley Alcibiades

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Candied (f, 2, Candy Ride {Arg}--Toni Tools, by Roaring Fever), a 3/4-length, come-from-behind debut winner sprinting at Saratoga Aug. 20, stayed perfect while stretching to two turns in Friday's 'Win and You're In' GI Darley Alcibiades at Keeneland. The 4-1 chance raced in between horses rounding the clubhouse turn in fifth. She advanced into fourth approaching the quarter pole, made a flashy, sweeping move at the top of the stretch, and, despite hanging on her left lead down the stretch, went on to defeat favored runaway GIII...

Background Check: Alcibiades

In this continuing series, we examine the past winners of significant filly/mare races by the lasting influence they've had on the breed. Up today is Keeneland's GI Darley Alcibiades S., a race with a number of notable producers to its credit. Keeneland's first president, Hal Price Headley, held that position until 1951. The next year, the Alcibiades S. was inaugurated in honor of his exceptional homebred two-time champion. The Kentucky Oaks winner was an even better broodmare than racehorse. Among her best foals were champion and influential sire Menow, while...

Liam's Map Filly Impressive in Alcibiades

Albaugh Family Stables's Juju's Map (Liam's Map) threw her hat in the ring among what appears to be a solid juvenile filly division with a powerful victory in Friday's "Win and You're In" GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland. Reined in to avoid a speed duel heading into the first bend, the rail-drawn bay sat in a clear second as Runup (Runhappy) zipped along through splits of :22.75 and :46 flat. The 2-1 favorite took over midway on the home bend, and was briefly challenged by her stablemate Matareya (Pioneerof...

Cox Pair Heads Alcibiades Dozen

A duo of fillies from the Brad Cox barn coming off dominant maiden victories will attract plenty of attention from bettors in an evenly-matched field of 12 in Friday's opening-day GI Darley Alcibiades S. at Keeneland. The 1 1/16-mile test offers to the winner a fees-paid birth to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Breaking from the rail is Albaugh Family Stables' narrow morning-line favorite Juju's Map (Liam's Map). Hammered down to 7-10 debuting for Cox July 25 at Ellis, the $300,000 Keeneland September graduate made a menacing run to...

Ravishing Fulfillment of a $500 Wish

The viability of the horse business hinges on a precarious equilibrium. Its values have to work out often enough for the rich guy to keep spending, but not so often that the rest of us have to pack up and go home. Very seldom, however, are both extremes embraced so proximately as by Meg Levy last weekend. On Sunday, the Grade I success of Valiance (Tapit) in the Juddmonte Spinster S. vindicated all the promise, in pedigree and physique, she had evinced as a $650,000 yearling sold through Levy's Bluewater...
