'Succession' Presented by Neuman Equine Insurance: Craig Bandoroff, Denali Stud

They say that life is what happens to us when we're busy making other plans. But even in a game where so much turns on chance, for better or worse, you can't just throw your hands up and leave it all to fate. After all, the countervailing dynamic to life on a horse farm is unchangingly cyclical: foaling, mating, breaking, prepping, to everything there is a season. Within those patterns, sure, we know to expect much unpredictability. But that's how horses teach us the long game, to be patient and...

What 60 Minutes Got Wrong, and What It Got Right

After the venerable and influential news show 60 Minutes aired a piece on horse racing last week, people within the industry were understandably upset. The story was ugly, filled with graphic and grisly coverage of horses breaking down, and portrayed racing as a sport where drugs, corruption and horse fatalities had reached the point of being out of control. "Horse racing is an industry where extremely devoted people labor because of one common thing: we all love horses, especially thoroughbred horses," Denali Stud's Craig Bandoroff wrote to 60 Minutes. "That...

To: 60minutes@cbsnews.com Let me preface this by saying I'm 68 years old and I have religiously watched 60 Minutes for the past 35 years and I've watched it less regularly my whole life. Another Year, Another Declining Foal Crop; Experts Chime In

When The Jockey Club announced last week that the estimated North American foal crop for 2024 was 18,000, a 2.7% decline from the projected 2023 foal crop, the news was hardly a surprise. By the time the final numbers are in for 2024,the foal crop will have declined in 18 of the last 19 years and this will be the smallest foal crop since 1964. Since 2005, when there were 38,365 foals, the crop has declined by more than half. How big of a problem is this. Why is it...

In Tribute to Anthony Manganaro

Tributes continue to come in in honor of industry innovator and Siena Farm owner Anthony Manganaro, who passed away suddenly Sunday in Saratoga. Craig Bandoroff, Denali Stud Anthony Manganaro wasn't out to make friends. He was out to change an industry he loved. He was a street fighter, a former labor organizer, and he was willing to fight. When one idea hit a dead end, he came up with another one and another one and, well, you get the idea. He never gave up in his mission to make the...

Horseracing Integrity And Welfare Q&A: Denali Stud's Craig Bandoroff

The Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU) provided this Q&A with questions submitted by Craig Bandoroff of Denali Stud. Although I've read explanations and have had people try to explain it to me I still don't understand why we test to such a small level.  As I understand it a picogram is one-trillionth of a gram.  How can that have any affect on a 1200-lb horse?  Why do we test to such a small level?  Are we using the ARCI recommended guidelines? It is important to remember that a picogram...

Letter to the Editor: Rules

As many people are aware, I have been a member of WHOA and a supporter of HISA from the beginning. I want what we all want. Uniform and sensible medication rules and testing that promotes the integrity of our sport while protecting the innocent and punishing the cheaters. So when I received a call advising me that a horse I help manage was disqualified for an acepromazine positive, I was surprised to say the least. My initial reaction and explanation to the owner was the horse must have had the...
